Quick Answer

Digital & data capabilities at H-O Products run a digital thread from quote to ship. You upload a CAD file (DXF, DWG, or STEP), and engineering reviews it on import for manufacturability before a quote or tooling is committed. Once the job runs, an ERP-integrated traveler ties the drawing revision, the material lot, and the operations together into one record that follows the part through the floor.

The remaining zones and duties are mapped in the When-to-spec list on this page. Also converted for this application: cellular urethanes. Values are per the TDS on file.

When To Spec What
  • Sending a part for review: DXF or DWG preferred for geometry; STEP accepted; PDF with dimensions for inspection criteria
  • Revision safety in production: the ERP traveler pins the accepted drawing revision for each job
  • Lot traceability: the material lot is captured against the traveler, so a shipped part traces back
  • Material questions at review: the TDS library across silicone foams, films, and solid elastomers is on hand
  • Regulated programs: rev-controlled drawings with change history and lot-specific documentation

What it is

The digital thread from quote to ship

The digital thread is the chain of records that keeps a part connected to its own definition from the moment you upload a file to the moment it ships. For a converter, that means four linked pieces: the CAD file and its engineering review, the ERP job traveler, the material data library behind the review, and the document control that holds revisions and lot linkage together.

None of this is a separate product you buy; it is how the work is organized. When you send a drawing, it enters a controlled flow rather than a folder. Engineering reviews the geometry against what the material and the process can hold. The accepted revision becomes the reference the job traveler points at. The traveler records which material lot was used and which operations ran.

And document control keeps the whole chain intact, so months later a shipped part can be traced back to the exact drawing rev and material lot it was built from.

Why the thread matters

A broken thread is how the wrong revision gets cut, or how a lot question after shipment becomes a guess. Keeping the file, the traveler, the datasheet, and the revision history linked is what makes the answer to "which rev and which lot?" a lookup instead of an investigation. See the related engineering and technical capability for the review that sits on top of this, or reach the team through the contact page.

Job travelers

ERP-integrated job travelers

Every job carries a digital traveler, a router generated from the ERP system, that ties the drawing revision, the material lot, and the operations together into one record. It is the spine the part follows across the floor.

One record per job
The traveler is generated for each job from the ERP system. It names the part, the accepted drawing revision, the planned operations, and the quantity, so the floor works from a single source rather than loose paperwork.
Drawing revision tied in
The traveler points at a specific, accepted drawing revision. If the drawing changes, the traveler reflects the change, which is how the wrong revision stays out of production.
Material lot recorded
The material lot used on the job is captured against the traveler. That link is what later lets a finished part be traced back to the exact lot it was cut from.
Operations linked
Each operation (cutting, lamination, finishing, inspection) is tracked against the traveler, so the record reflects what actually ran, in order, not just what was planned.

Why ERP integration matters

Because the traveler is generated from the ERP system rather than typed by hand, the drawing rev, the lot, and the operations stay consistent with the order and with each other. That consistency is what makes traceability a reliable lookup at the end of the run.

How the digital thread runs a job
  1. 1
    Upload the CAD file
Send a DXF, DWG, or STEP with the material callout, thickness, critical tolerances, and any adhesive or liner spec. A dimensioned PDF helps define inspection criteria.
  2. 2
    Engineering review on import
Geometry is checked against the material and process, with the relevant TDS from the data library on hand. The accepted revision becomes the reference for the job.
  3. 3
    Traveler & first parts
Samples typically 3-5 business days for common configurations. Standard production 2 weeks; special orders run custom lead times. The traveler links rev, lot, and operations.
  4. 4
    Ship with traceability
Parts ship from Winsted, CT, with the drawing rev and material lot linked, so each shipment traces back to its definition on request.

FAQ

Digital & data questions

Common questions from engineers about file handling, travelers, and traceability.

5 questions

What CAD file formats can I upload?

DXF or DWG for 2D profiles used in tooling and cutting, and STEP for 3D models and multi-layer reference. A dimensioned PDF is useful for defining inspection criteria. Include the material callout and thickness, critical-dimension tolerances, edge-quality requirements, and any adhesive or liner spec so the review has what it needs.

What happens when I upload a file?

Engineering reviews the file on import, checking the geometry against what the chosen material and process can hold: feature sizes, tolerances, and edge requirements. Anything that would not build is raised before a quote or tooling is committed, so the accepted revision is one that can actually be made.

What is an ERP-integrated job traveler?

A job traveler is the router that follows a job through the floor. Generated from the ERP system, it ties the drawing revision, the material lot, and the operations into one record per job. Because it is generated rather than hand-written, the rev, the lot, and the operations stay consistent with the order and with each other.

How does a traveler keep the right revision in production?

The traveler points at a specific, accepted drawing revision. If the drawing changes, the traveler reflects the new rev, and superseded revisions stay out of the work. That link between the job and a controlled rev is how the wrong version is kept off the floor.

What is in the material data library?

Technical datasheets for the 687+ materials H-O converts, across 50 chemistries and 8 families, organized by material and grade. During a CAD review the relevant TDS, with its temperature range, properties, and grade designations, is on hand. Properties are taken from the source manufacturers' datasheets; confirm against the current vendor TDS for your construction.

What to send for a quote

For an accurate quote, include the following with your drawing or sample:

  • DXF
  • DWG
  • STEP
  • Material callout
  • Thickness
  • Critical tolerances
  • Adhesive or liner spec. A dimensioned PDF helps define inspection criteria

Material data & standards. Material properties, temperature ranges, and grade designations referenced during CAD review and quoting are taken from the source manufacturers' technical data sheets. The data library organizes those references; it does not replace them. Verify against your application and the current vendor TDS for your specific construction before final specification.

Data & document handling. Uploaded drawings and specifications are used to review, quote, and produce your parts and are maintained under our ISO 9001:2015 certified quality management system. Drawings are revision-controlled and material lots are linked so a shipped part can be traced to its drawing rev and lot; lot-specific documentation is available on request.
