Quick Answer

PSA lamination at H-O Products applies pressure-sensitive adhesive and a release liner to foams, films, rubber, and gasket materials so parts arrive ready to peel and stick. Transfer adhesives are adhesive-only films; supported double-coated tapes carry a carrier between two adhesive faces. Adhesive chemistry is selected to the substrate and service temperature: acrylic for durability and aging, rubber for high-tack grab and low-surface-energy plastics, silicone for high-temperature and silicone-faced parts.

The shop laminates substrates from the same 687+ material inventory across 50 chemistries kept for converting, including AFTC acrylic foam tapes, PSAs, BISCO® sponge, PORON®, and Kapton®. Laminated stock then feeds kiss cutting or die cutting to deliver liner-backed parts. Peel, shear, and tack values are validated to your substrate, surface prep, and service conditions — we don’t publish a single number that fits every job.

What we do

PSA lamination and material bonding, run in-house

PSA lamination applies pressure-sensitive adhesive to a substrate, on one face or both, with a release liner so the part stays clean until it is applied. Material bonding uses a supported double-coated tape to join two substrates into a single laminated construction. H-O performs both in Winsted, with the adhesive chemistry and liner matched to each substrate, and can feed the laminated stock straight into kiss cutting or die cutting in the same workflow.

H-O psa-lamination operation overview, small custom image

What makes the operation different is the depth of the material inventory and the material knowledge behind it. The same substrates we laminate, from AFTC acrylic foam tapes and PSAs to BISCO® sponge, PORON®, foils, and Kapton®, are stock we already convert, so we know how each substrate takes an adhesive: which surfaces bond readily, which are low-surface-energy and need a rubber or specialty adhesive, and which need surface prep before a PSA will hold.

In-house vs sourced

PSA lamination, double-coated bonding, release-liner application, and lamination feed into die cutting are performed in Winsted, CT. When a part is better served as a die-cut shape than a laminated sheet, we run flatbed die cutting on the laminated stock, or feed the laminated web into the die in-line. See the process comparison below.

Transfer adhesive, double-coated tape & single-sided PSA

1

Transfer adhesive

An unsupported, adhesive-only film carried on a release liner. Laminated onto a substrate it leaves a thin, conformable bond layer with no carrier, well suited to thin gaskets, nameplates, and bonding where added thickness is unwelcome.

2

Supported double-coated tape

Adhesive on both faces of a film or scrim carrier. The carrier adds dimensional stability and handling strength, and lets each face carry a different adhesive chemistry for bonding two dissimilar substrates.

3

Single-sided PSA lamination

A pressure-sensitive adhesive coated onto one face of a foam, rubber, or film substrate, with a release liner. The standard construction for peel-and-stick gaskets, pads, and seals.

4

Acrylic foam tape lamination

AFTC acrylic foam tape laminated as the bonding layer, giving a conformable, gap-filling bond that absorbs stress and joins dissimilar substrates without mechanical fasteners.

Picking the adhesive

The adhesive form and chemistry are calibrated per substrate and service temperature. A thin 0.002″ Kapton® film takes a transfer adhesive for a low-profile bond; a 0.125″ BISCO® sponge gasket takes a single-sided PSA and liner; two dissimilar plastics call for a supported double-coated tape. Tell us the substrate, what it bonds to, and the service temperature, and we will set the adhesive form, chemistry, and liner.

Peel, shear, and tack values are validated to your substrate, surface prep, and service conditions — we don’t publish a single number that fits every job.

Spec your laminated part

What to specify so the bond holds on your assembly

Specifying a laminated part means describing the substrate, the adhesive, and the liner. Getting these right up front keeps the bond holding on your assembly; our team reviews every spec for manufacturability before lamination.

Substrate and what it bonds to
Name the substrate to be laminated and the surface it will be applied to. Bonds to a high-surface-energy metal behave very differently from bonds to a low-surface-energy polyolefin, and the adhesive chemistry is selected to the harder of the two surfaces.
Adhesive form and sidedness
State single-sided or double-sided, and whether you need a transfer adhesive (adhesive only) or a supported double-coated tape (carrier between two faces). On a double-coated part, call out if each face bonds to a different substrate so the chemistries can differ.
Adhesive chemistry and service temperature
Give the service temperature and any chemical or UV exposure, and we match acrylic, rubber, or silicone. Peel, shear, and tack values are validated to your substrate, surface prep, and service conditions — we don’t publish a single number that fits every job.
Release liner
Choose the liner: poly-coated paper, film, a differential liner that releases one side first, or a tabbed/finger liner for easy peel on small parts. The liner sets how the part dispenses and whether it can be applied by hand or by machine.
Material and spec details
Identify the substrate grade, thickness, and any existing adhesive or liner. Include the surface condition of the mating part, the annual quantity, and target timing. A sample of the current part helps us match the adhesive and liner exactly.
How a PSA lamination program runs
  1. 1
    Send spec & material
Share the substrate and what it bonds to, single- or double-sided, the adhesive chemistry, the release liner, and the service temperature. A sample part works too.

FAQ

PSA lamination questions

Common questions from engineers speccing PSA-backed and bonded parts.

5 questions

What is the difference between a transfer adhesive and a double-coated tape?

A transfer adhesive is an unsupported, adhesive-only film on a release liner, laminated to leave a thin bond layer with no carrier, suited to thin parts where added thickness is unwelcome. A double-coated tape carries adhesive on both faces of a film or scrim carrier; the carrier adds stability and lets each face use a different chemistry to bond two dissimilar substrates. We pick the form by substrate, thickness, and the bond required.

Which adhesive chemistry should I use: acrylic, rubber, or silicone?

Acrylic builds durable bonds on high-surface-energy substrates such as metals and many engineering plastics and resists UV and heat aging. Rubber gives quick high tack and grips low-surface-energy plastics such as polyolefins. Silicone holds at temperature extremes and bonds to silicone-faced surfaces. Tell us the substrate and the service temperature and we match the chemistry. Peel, shear, and tack values are validated to your substrate, surface prep, and service conditions — we don’t publish a single number that fits every job.

Can you bond to low-surface-energy plastics like polypropylene?

Yes, with the right chemistry. Low-surface-energy plastics such as polypropylene and polyethylene resist a general-purpose acrylic, so we select a rubber or a specialty LSE acrylic that wets out the surface. Where a surface is borderline, a primer or surface prep can raise the effective surface energy. Tell us the substrate and we match the adhesive to its dyne level from the vendor TDS.

What release liners can you supply?

Poly-coated paper for general use, film liners for die cutting and automated dispensing, differential liners that release one side first on double-coated parts, and tabbed or finger liners that give a grip edge on small peel-and-stick parts. We select the liner so the part peels cleanly and applies by hand or by machine, and size it to your part.

What materials can H-O Products laminate with PSA?

Substrates from the same 687+ SKU inventory we convert: AFTC acrylic foam tapes (126+), acrylic, rubber, and silicone PSAs and transfer tapes (28+), films and foils including Kapton® and conductive foil, BISCO® silicone sponge (100+), PORON® and cellular urethanes (80+), and rubber and cork-rubber gasket stock.
