How to Choose the Right Gasket Material for Your Application

Die-cut rubber gaskets in assorted shapes

The right gasket material depends on where the part has to live: temperature extremes, chemical exposure, flame-rating requirements, EMI environments, and how much compression the joint sees over its life. This guide walks through the six factors we review with engineers across aerospace, medical, defense, EV, and industrial programs.

1. Start with the application requirements

Before comparing materials, define the operating envelope: temperature range, flame-resistance needs, chemical exposure risks, EMI shielding requirements, and compression specifications. A material that excels in one environment can fail early in another.

2. Match the material type to the job

  • Silicone foam — high-temperature and UV resistance
  • EMI shielding elastomers — conductive sealing for electronics enclosures
  • FDA-grade silicone — medical and food-contact applications
  • Neoprene / EPDM — weather resistance in outdoor service
  • Vinyl nitrile — impact protection and cushioning
  • Polyurethane foams — conformability and sealing at low closure force
  • Butyl — moisture sealing and low permeability

3. Understand compression performance

Two properties govern long-term sealing. Compression set measures how well a material recovers after being compressed; a high compression set means the gasket takes a permanent squash and stops sealing. Compression force deflection (CFD) indicates how much force is required to compress the material, which matters for enclosures with limited closure force.

4. Check compliance standards early

Industry requirements commonly include UL 94 V-0 flame ratings, FAR 25.853 for aerospace interiors, FDA 21 CFR for medical use, MIL-STD-810 for defense environments, and REACH / RoHS for chemical compliance. Confirming the standard up front narrows the material field quickly.

5. Don't overlook the adhesive

Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are often an overlooked part of gasket design. Options range from high-temperature acrylics to biocompatible variants, and the wrong PSA can undermine an otherwise correct material choice.

6. Involve your converter early

Early supplier involvement prevents design-cycle complications and helps ensure compliance before tooling is committed. H-O Products provides application reviews, custom material development, rapid prototyping, and full converting capabilities with testing support.

Ready to choose a gasket material?

Send the environment, the compression available, the standard you need to meet, and the geometry. Engineering reviews every RFQ, recommends a material family, and converts samples on your geometry.

Samples typically ship in 3 to 5 business days for common die-cut configurations; standard production runs about two weeks; special orders are quoted to the job.

Frequently asked questions

What is compression set and why does it matter?

Compression set measures how well a material recovers after being compressed. A high compression set means the gasket takes a permanent squash and stops sealing over time — critical for joints that stay clamped for years.

Do I need to pick the material before requesting a quote?

No. Describe the environment, compression, and any compliance standard; H-O will recommend candidate families and convert samples on your geometry.
