APSAEP is a differential double-sided laminating adhesive construction featuring distinct adhesive chemistries on each face: a 2.9–3.1 mil silicone adhesive layer on one side and a 1.9–2.1 mil acrylic adhesive layer on the opposite side, separated by a 3.0 mil cloth carrier. The configuration is shipped with a semi-bleached kraft release liner (4.7 mil) plus a 2 mil polyester liner layer.

This differential construction allows the adhesive to bond to two substrate categories with very different surface chemistries — a silicone-compatible interface on one face (useful for silicone rubber or silicone-coated substrates) and an aggressive acrylic PSA on the other face for bonding to metals, glass, and rigid plastics.

The TDS publishes extensive adhesion data for the acrylic side across multiple substrates, angles (180° and 90°), and laminating films (2 mil clear polyester and 2 mil aluminum foil). Peel adhesion to stainless steel builds from 50+ oz/in at 15 minutes to 80+ oz/in at 3-day room-temperature dwell (180°, polyester laminate), with the 160°F heat-aged value at 38+ oz/in.

Adhesion to acrylic and glass reaches 100+ oz/in when tested with aluminum foil laminate at 90° peel angle. Polypropylene adhesion is 26 oz/in, confirming this is a polar-substrate-optimized adhesive. Shear adhesion is 5 hours under a 4 lb load (1 sq in) per ASTM D3654 Method A, and tack is 820–840 gm per ASTM D2979. Service temperature for the acrylic side extends from −40°F to 302°F.

What differentiates APSAEP from other acrylic adhesives?

APSAEP is a differential adhesive construction — silicone on one face, acrylic on the other, separated by a cloth carrier. This enables a single component to bond to both silicone-based substrates (which standard acrylics cannot adhere to) and polar substrates like metal and glass. Standard acrylic adhesives in the APSA family (APSAA3, APSAS3, APSAFS) are single-chemistry products, not differential constructions.

Why is peel adhesion important when selecting this adhesive?

For differential adhesives, peel adhesion must be verified on both faces across representative substrates. The APSAEP TDS publishes extensive acrylic-side peel data across stainless steel, acrylic, glass, and polypropylene at multiple peel angles (180° and 90°), dwell times (15 minutes / 3 days RT / 3 days @ 160°F), and laminate films (polyester and aluminum foil) — allowing specifiers to match test conditions to their application. The 26 oz/in polypropylene value confirms the acrylic side is polar-optimized.

What is the service temperature range for APSAEP?

The acrylic side has a service temperature range of −40°F to 302°F. The TDS does not publish a service temperature range for the silicone side separately; silicone adhesives typically support higher upper limits than acrylics.

Is APSAEP suitable for bonding to silicone substrates?

Yes — the silicone side of the differential construction is specifically designed for compatibility with silicone rubber and silicone-coated substrates, which are generally incompatible with standard acrylic adhesives. No specific regulatory compliance standards are listed on the TDS for this material.

    How should APSAEP be specified?

Specify adhesive designation (APSAEP / Acrylic Adhesive EP), orientation (silicone side to silicone substrate / acrylic side to polar substrate), adhesive thicknesses (2.9–3.1 mils silicone / 1.9–2.1 mils acrylic), carrier (3.0 mil cloth), compliance requirements, and finished format.
