    • Structural bonding of glass and glass/epoxy panels to metal frames on high surface energy substrates where maximum bond strength is required
    • Bonding of coated and anodized aluminum components requiring absorption of differential thermal expansion
    • Pre-powder coating assembly bonding where tape must survive the powder coat oven cycle before topcoat application
    • Attachment of stainless steel and galvanized steel parts on assemblies requiring a permanent structural bond at thin bondline
    • Medium surface energy substrate bonding in combination with H-O Products Primer 33 or Primer 101

Common industries: Automotive manufacturing, architectural glazing, industrial assembly, metal fabrication.

AFTC 5004 is a 0.015″ thick grade in the SilverTape family of high-performance double-sided acrylic foam tapes, designed to bond a wide variety of materials with high and medium surface energy — including glass, glass/epoxy, stainless steel, galvanized steel, anodized steel, and coated aluminum. The tape’s stability and durability are cited on the TDS as the basis for its strongest-available-bond performance on high surface energy substrates.

The acrylic adhesive foam core is closed cell and carries a permanent adhesive system on both faces, protected by a red PE liner. The formulation is suitable for pre-powder coating applications, allowing it to remain in place through a powder coat oven cycle.

The tape exhibits excellent UV resistance and excellent solvent resistance per the TDS. In combination with a primer, the SilverTape family provides excellent adhesion performance on medium surface energy materials as well. Static shear strength is 1,000 grams per 1/2 square inch held for 10,000 minutes (7 days) at 72°F, and 500 grams at 150°F and 200°F.

Surface preparation is critical: substrates should be cleaned with IPA for light to moderate contamination, or MEK, Heptane, or Acetone for heavy contamination followed by an IPA wipe. Raw aluminum must be abraded prior to bonding. A minimum bond-line pressure of 14.5 psi must be applied. Full end-strength is reached within 72 hours; use of H-O Products Primer 33 or Primer 101 reduces this to approximately 20 minutes.

Minimum recommended application temperature is 59°F.

What differentiates AFTC 5004 from AFTC 5005 at the same thickness?

AFTC 5004 and AFTC 5005 are both 0.015" thick SilverTape grades. AFTC 5004 is gray with a density of 53 lb/ft³ and delivers 17 lb/in peel adhesion and 93 lb/in² dynamic shear strength. AFTC 5005 is white with a density of 52 lb/ft³ and delivers 19 lb/in peel adhesion and 76 lb/in² dynamic shear strength. AFTC 5004 offers higher dynamic shear; AFTC 5005 offers higher peel adhesion.

Why is peel adhesion important when selecting a structural bonding tape?

Peel adhesion determines whether the tape maintains contact with the substrate when the assembly is subjected to flexing, vibration, or forces that act to lift the bond line at its edges. In bonded assemblies using glass, metal, or coated substrates, inadequate peel adhesion leads to edge delamination and bond failure. AFTC 5004 delivers 17 lb/in at 90° peel, providing durable edge retention on the high surface energy substrates for which it is formulated.

What is the operating temperature range for AFTC 5004?

AFTC 5004 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 248°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 374°F, as listed on the TDS.

Is AFTC 5004 suitable for pre-powder coating applications?

Yes. The TDS states that AFTC 5004 is suitable for pre-powder coating applications, meaning the tape can be applied to the assembly prior to the powder coat oven cycle. No additional regulatory compliance standards are stated on the TDS.

How should AFTC 5004 be specified?

Specify grade (AFTC 5004), thickness (0.015"), color (gray), compliance requirements, dimensional tolerances, adhesive side (double), liner type (red PE liner), and finished format.
