Common industries: Automotive manufacturing, architectural glazing, industrial assembly, metal fabrication.
AFTC 5011 is a 0.047″ thick grade in the SilverTape family of high-performance double-sided acrylic foam tapes, designed to bond a wide variety of materials with high and medium surface energy — including glass, glass/epoxy, stainless steel, galvanized steel, anodized steel, and coated aluminum. The TDS cites toughness as the defining characteristic driving its strongest-available-bond performance on high surface energy substrates.
The acrylic adhesive foam core is closed cell and carries a permanent adhesive system on both faces, protected by a red PE liner. The tape’s very high temperature resistance is a noted characteristic.
The tape exhibits excellent UV resistance and excellent solvent resistance per the TDS. In combination with a primer, the SilverTape family provides excellent adhesion performance on medium surface energy materials. Static shear strength is 1,000 grams per 1/2 square inch held for 10,000 minutes (7 days) at 72°F, and 250 grams at 150°F and 200°F.
Surface preparation is critical: substrates should be cleaned with IPA for light to moderate contamination, or MEK, Heptane, or Acetone for heavy contamination followed by an IPA wipe. Raw aluminum must be abraded prior to bonding. A minimum bond-line pressure of 14.5 psi must be applied. Full end-strength is reached within 72 hours; use of H-O Products Primer 33 or Primer 101 reduces this to approximately 20 minutes.
Minimum recommended application temperature is 59°F.
What differentiates AFTC 5011 from thinner SilverTape grades such as AFTC 5008?
AFTC 5011 is 0.047" thick — approximately 57% thicker than AFTC 5008 at 0.03". It delivers the highest 90° peel adhesion in this SilverTape comparison at 22 lb/in, providing stronger edge retention in applications where peel forces are the primary concern. The greater thickness also offers more gap-filling capability for less uniform bonding surfaces.
Why is peel adhesion important when selecting a structural bonding tape?
Peel adhesion determines whether the tape maintains contact with the substrate when the assembly is subjected to flexing, vibration, or forces that act to lift the bond line at its edges. In bonded assemblies using glass, metal, or coated substrates, inadequate peel adhesion leads to edge delamination and bond failure. AFTC 5011 delivers 22 lb/in at 90° peel — the highest in this SilverTape thickness range — providing maximum edge retention on high surface energy substrates.
What is the operating temperature range for AFTC 5011?
AFTC 5011 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 248°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 374°F, as listed on the TDS.
Is AFTC 5011 suitable for high-temperature manufacturing environments?
Yes. AFTC 5011 is rated to 374°F short-term and 248°F long-term, and the TDS notes very high temperature resistance as a key characteristic. No specific regulatory compliance standards are stated on the TDS.
How should AFTC 5011 be specified?
Specify grade (AFTC 5011), thickness (0.047"), color (gray), compliance requirements, dimensional tolerances, adhesive side (double), liner type (red PE liner), and finished format.
