AFTC 5106
AFTC 5106 is a 0.024″ thick, double-sided closed cell acrylic foam tape designed for removable bonding of high and medium surface energy materials. Due to its high density (65 lb/ft³), it can be removed from substrates without leaving a trace; peel adhesion is intentionally relatively low by design. It delivers dynamic shear strength of 90 lb/in² and tensile strength of 91 lb/in², with a temperature range of -40°F to 212°F long-term and 320°F short-term.

- Removable bonding of glass and glass/epoxy panels to metal or aluminum frames where clean removal without adhesive residue is required
- Temporary or repositionable structural attachment of coated and anodized aluminum components during assembly or fitting processes
- Bonding of galvanized steel components in assemblies where future disassembly without substrate damage is anticipated
- Clear-tape bonding of transparent substrates where tape visibility through the assembly must be minimized
- Applications requiring high in-plane shear and T-block resistance combined with clean removability at the thinnest available bondline in the 51xx series
Common industries: Glazing, industrial assembly, architectural metalwork, display fabrication, transportation.
AFTC 5106 is the thinnest grade in the 51xx series of removable high-density double-sided acrylic foam tapes, designed for bonding a wide variety of materials with high and medium surface energy — including glass, glass/epoxy, galvanized steel, anodized aluminum, and coated aluminum.
The defining characteristic of the 51xx series is its removability: the high density formulation (65 lb/ft³ — the highest of any AFTC series) allows the tape to be removed from substrates cleanly, without leaving adhesive residue. The TDS explicitly notes that peel adhesion for this series is relatively low by design, and that high shear and T-block strength are the primary performance features.
The acrylic adhesive foam core is closed cell and carries a permanent adhesive system on both faces, protected by a red PE liner.
Despite its removable character, AFTC 5106 delivers high dynamic shear (90 lb/in²) and tensile strength (91 lb/in²), and is capable of absorbing differential thermal expansion between bonded materials. Static shear strength is 1,000 grams per 1/2 square inch held for 10,000 minutes (7 days) at 72°F, 750 grams at 150°F, and 500 grams at 200°F. The tape exhibits excellent UV resistance and excellent solvent resistance per the TDS.
A minimum bond-line pressure of 14.5 psi must be applied in a rolling fashion. Full end-strength is reached within 72 hours; use of H-O Products Primer 33 or Primer 101 reduces this to approximately 20 minutes. Minimum recommended application temperature is 59°F.
What differentiates AFTC 5106 from thicker grades 5108 and 5115 in the 51xx removable series?
AFTC 5106 is the thinnest grade in the 51xx series at 0.024" and delivers the highest dynamic shear (90 lb/in²) and tensile strength (91 lb/in²) in the series. Compared to 5108 (0.031", 84/82 lb/in²) and 5115 (0.059", 82/76 lb/in²), AFTC 5106 provides the tightest bondline profile with maximum in-plane strength. Both 5106 and 5108 also retain 750 grams static shear at 150°F, compared to 500 grams for 5115.
Why is shear strength the critical performance property for the AFTC 51xx removable tape series?
In removable tape applications, peel adhesion is intentionally low by design — the tape must release cleanly from substrates without leaving residue. The load-bearing capability of the bond therefore relies primarily on shear and T-block strength rather than peel. High dynamic shear (90 lb/in² for AFTC 5106) ensures the assembly resists in-plane forces and vibration loads during service, while the high-density formulation (65 lb/ft³) maintains cohesive integrity so the tape separates cleanly at removal rather than splitting or leaving residue on the substrate.
What is the operating temperature range for AFTC 5106?
AFTC 5106 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 212°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 320°F, as listed on the TDS.
Is AFTC 5106 suitable for applications requiring clean removal without substrate damage?
Yes. The TDS states that AFTC 5106 is removable from substrates without leaving a trace, due to its high density formulation. It is designed for applications where removal without adhesive residue is a requirement. No specific regulatory compliance standards are stated on the TDS.
How should AFTC 5106 be specified?
Specify grade (AFTC 5106), thickness (0.024"), color (clear), compliance requirements, dimensional tolerances, adhesive side (double), liner type (red PE liner), and finished format.
