AFTC 5115

AFTC 5115 is a 0.059″ thick, double-sided closed cell acrylic foam tape designed for removable bonding of high and medium surface energy materials. • Removable bonding of glass and glass/epoxy panels to metal or aluminum frames where clean removal without adhesive residue is required and maximum bondline gap accommodation is needed
    • Temporary or repositionable structural attachment of coated and anodized aluminum components in assemblies with larger surface gaps or irregularities
    • Bonding of galvanized steel components requiring the highest peel adhesion in the 51xx series while maintaining clean removability
    • Clear-tape bonding of transparent substrates where tape visibility through the assembly must be minimized at the thickest available bondline
    • Applications requiring maximum conformability combined with clean removability in the 51xx removable series

Common industries: Glazing, industrial assembly, architectural metalwork, display fabrication, transportation.

AFTC 5115 is the thickest grade in the 51xx series of removable high-density double-sided acrylic foam tapes at 0.059″, designed for bonding a wide variety of materials with high and medium surface energy — including glass, glass/epoxy, galvanized steel, anodized aluminum, and coated aluminum.

The defining characteristic of the 51xx series is its removability: the high density formulation (65 lb/ft³) allows the tape to be removed from substrates cleanly, without leaving adhesive residue. The TDS explicitly notes that peel adhesion for this series is relatively low by design, and that high shear and T-block strength are the primary performance features.

The acrylic adhesive foam core is closed cell and carries a permanent adhesive system on both faces, protected by a red PE liner.

AFTC 5115 delivers the highest peel adhesion in the 51xx series at 18 lb/in, consistent with the behavior of thicker acrylic foam grades. Despite its removable character, it is capable of absorbing differential thermal expansion between bonded materials and maintains dynamic shear of 82 lb/in². Static shear strength is 1,000 grams per 1/2 square inch held for 10,000 minutes (7 days) at 72°F, and 500 grams at 150°F and 200°F.

The tape exhibits excellent UV resistance and excellent solvent resistance per the TDS. A minimum bond-line pressure of 14.5 psi must be applied in a rolling fashion. Full end-strength is reached within 72 hours; use of H-O Products Primer 33 or Primer 101 reduces this to approximately 20 minutes. Minimum recommended application temperature is 59°F.

What differentiates AFTC 5115 from thinner grades 5106 and 5108 in the 51xx removable series?

AFTC 5115 is the thickest grade in the 51xx series at 0.059" and delivers the highest peel adhesion in the series at 18 lb/in. Compared to 5108 (0.031", 750 grams static shear at 150°F) and 5106 (0.024", 750 grams at 150°F), AFTC 5115 drops to 500 grams static shear at 150°F, which should be considered in elevated-temperature applications. It is the preferred choice where maximum gap accommodation, highest peel retention, and greatest conformability are required.

Why is shear strength the critical performance property for the AFTC 51xx removable tape series?

In removable tape applications, peel adhesion is intentionally low by design — the tape must release cleanly from substrates without leaving residue. The load-bearing capability of the bond therefore relies primarily on shear and T-block strength rather than peel. High dynamic shear (82 lb/in² for AFTC 5115) ensures the assembly resists in-plane forces and vibration loads during service, while the high-density formulation (65 lb/ft³) maintains cohesive integrity so the tape separates cleanly at removal rather than splitting or leaving residue on the substrate.

What is the operating temperature range for AFTC 5115?

AFTC 5115 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 212°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 320°F, as listed on the TDS.

Is AFTC 5115 suitable for applications requiring clean removal without substrate damage?

Yes. The TDS states that AFTC 5115 is removable from substrates without leaving a trace, due to its high density formulation. It is designed for applications where removal without adhesive residue is a requirement. No specific regulatory compliance standards are stated on the TDS.

How should AFTC 5115 be specified?

Specify grade (AFTC 5115), thickness (0.059"), color (clear), compliance requirements, dimensional tolerances, adhesive side (double), liner type (red PE liner), and finished format.
