Common industries: Industrial assembly, architectural glazing, automotive manufacturing, metal fabrication, transportation.
AFTC 5312 is a 0.079″ thick white grade in the SilverTape family of high-performance double-sided acrylic foam tapes, designed for bonding high surface energy materials — including glass, glass/epoxy, stainless steel, galvanized steel, anodized steel, and coated aluminum.
The TDS explicitly identifies this grade as suitable for replacing mechanical fasteners such as rivets, screws, spot-welds, and liquid adhesives, distinguishing it as a structural bonding solution in fabrication and assembly contexts. The acrylic adhesive foam core is closed cell and carries a permanent adhesive system on both faces, protected by a red PE liner.
The tape exhibits excellent UV resistance, excellent solvent resistance, and excellent water resistance per the TDS — the last being a property listed on this grade that is not present on all SilverTape grades. Static shear strength is 1,000 grams per 1/2 square inch held for 10,000 minutes (7 days) at 72°F, and 500 grams at 150°F and 200°F.
Surface preparation is critical: substrates should be cleaned with IPA for light to moderate contamination, or MEK, Heptane, or Acetone for heavy contamination followed by an IPA wipe. Raw aluminum must be abraded prior to bonding. A minimum bond-line pressure of 14.5 psi must be applied. Full end-strength is reached within 72 hours; use of H-O Products Primer 33 or Primer 101 reduces this to approximately 20 minutes.
Minimum recommended application temperature is 65°F.
What differentiates AFTC 5312 from AFTC 5313, the adjacent gray grade at similar thickness?
AFTC 5312 is 0.079" thick, white, with a density of 55 lb/ft³, a minimum application temperature of 65°F, and storage conditions of 40°F to 95°F. AFTC 5313 is 0.078" thick, gray, with a density of 54 lb/ft³, a minimum application temperature of 59°F, and storage conditions of 39.2°F to 100.4°F. Both share the same adhesion values. Additionally, AFTC 5312 lists excellent water resistance on the TDS, which is not listed for AFTC 5313. AFTC 5312 also explicitly identifies fastener-replacement as a typical application.
Why is peel adhesion important when selecting a structural bonding tape for fastener replacement?
In fastener-replacement applications, peel adhesion determines whether the tape bond can withstand the same edge-lifting and flexural forces that mechanical fasteners resist through clamping. A tape that loses peel adhesion at bond edges will allow progressive delamination and assembly failure. AFTC 5312 delivers 22 lb/in at 90° peel, providing the durable edge retention required for replacing rivets, screws, and spot-welds on high surface energy substrates.
What is the operating temperature range for AFTC 5312?
AFTC 5312 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 248°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 374°F, as listed on the TDS.
Is AFTC 5312 suitable for exterior or moisture-exposed environments?
Yes. The TDS rates AFTC 5312 as having excellent water resistance in addition to excellent UV and solvent resistance, supporting use in exterior and moisture-exposed bonding applications. No specific regulatory compliance standards are stated on the TDS.
How should AFTC 5312 be specified?
Specify grade (AFTC 5312), thickness (0.079"), color (white), compliance requirements, dimensional tolerances, adhesive side (double), liner type (red PE liner), and finished format.
