AFTC 5332
AFTC 5332 is a double sided, closed cell acrylic foam tape with a permanent Acrylic Coating 50 adhesive system on both faces, available at 0.025″ thickness. It is specifically designed for bonding a wide variety of medium and low surface energy plastic substrates — including ABS, ASA, EVA, PMMA, PS, PVC, and PC — and is capable of absorbing the differing thermal expansions of joined materials, which in plastics can be extremely high. The tape delivers a 90° peel adhesion of 20 lb/in, a tensile strength of 107 lb/in², and is rated for long-term service up to 212°F and short-term exposure up to 320°F.

AFTC 5332 is a double sided acrylic foam tape using Acrylic Coating 50 on both faces — a formulation specifically targeted at medium and low surface energy plastic substrates including ABS, ASA, EVA, PMMA, PS, PVC, and PC. Unlike the general purpose 53-series Coating 40 grades, Acrylic Coating 50 is developed for the particular challenge of bonding plastics, where differential thermal expansion between joined materials can be extremely high.
At 0.025″ thickness, it provides a thin-profile bond line while delivering a static shear strength of 1,500 grams at 72°F and high impact resistance below 0°C.
The tape demonstrates excellent resistance to solvents and UV exposure. Static shear data extends only to 150°F — a narrower range than most other AFTC grades. As a pressure sensitive adhesive, a minimum bond line pressure of 14.5 psi applied by hand roller or mechanical presser is required for full adhesion.
For lower surface energy plastic substrates, primer use is recommended where needed; the AFTC line requires up to 72 hours to reach end-strength without primer, which is reduced to approximately 20 minutes with a compatible primer. Shelf life is 18 months when stored in original packaging in a dry environment between 39.2°F and 100.4°F.
What differentiates AFTC 5332 from standard 53-series Coating 40 grades such as AFTC 5355 or AFTC 5357?
AFTC 5332 uses Acrylic Coating 50 — a formulation specifically developed for medium and low surface energy plastic substrates including ABS, ASA, EVA, PMMA, PS, PVC, and PC — rather than the Acrylic Coating 40 used in general purpose 53-series grades. The TDS specifically notes that thermal expansion in plastics can be extremely high, and this tape is designed to accommodate that. Static shear data extends only to 150°F, compared to 200°F or 350°F for Coating 40 grades. Its tensile strength of 107 lb/in² and dynamic shear of 101 lb/in² are among the highest in the AFTC line.
Why is peel adhesion important when selecting an acrylic foam tape?
Peel adhesion — measured here at 20 lb/in per ASTM D3330 — determines how effectively the tape resists being peeled or lifted from a bonded substrate under service loading. For medium and low surface energy plastics, where adhesion is inherently more challenging than on high energy substrates, the Acrylic Coating 50 formulation is specifically developed to maintain adequate peel performance across a broad range of plastic types.
What is the operating temperature range for AFTC 5332?
AFTC 5332 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 212°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 320°F.
Is AFTC 5332 suitable for outdoor or UV-exposed environments?
The TDS rates AFTC 5332 as having excellent UV resistance and excellent solvent resistance, and notes that it maintains high impact resistance below 0°C. No specific regulatory compliance standards are listed on the TDS.
How should AFTC 5332 be specified?
Specify grade (AFTC 5332), thickness (0.025"), color (Gray), liner type (Red PE), dimensional tolerances, and finished format. Confirm plastic substrate type and surface energy level, and confirm minimum application temperature of 59°F can be met at time of bonding.
