    • Bonding of high and medium surface energy plastics where a Bordeaux PE liner is required for visual process differentiation
    • Bonding to glass, steel, aluminum, and ceramics at a 0.031″ bondline with high initial tack and plasticizer resistance
    • Thin or textured surface bonding where full surface, tension-free adhesion is required
    • Double-sided bonding of dissimilar materials subject to differential thermal expansion
    • Low-temperature service assemblies requiring maintained impact resistance below 0°C

Common industries: Automotive, Industrial Manufacturing, Construction, Electronics.

AFTC 5339 is the 0.031″ gray grade in the AFTC 53-series general purpose Acrylic Coating 40 range. It is specifically designed for bonding high and medium surface energy substrates and is capable of absorbing the differing thermal expansions of two different materials.

The 53-series is described on the TDS as having a very high initial tack, very good plasticizer resistance, and the adaptability to bond thin or textured surfaces full surface and tension free. 5339 is the only grade in the 53-series Acrylic Coating 40 range supplied with a Bordeaux PE liner rather than a Red PE liner, providing a visual process control distinction from other 53-series grades.

AFTC 5339 achieves a 90° peel adhesion of 21 lb/in per ASTM D3330, a dynamic shear strength of 93 lb/in² per ASTM D1002, and a tensile strength of 92 lb/in² per ASTM D897. Static shear strength at 72°F is 1,000 grams (per 1/2 in² for 10,000 minutes / 7 days) per ASTM 3654. The tape offers excellent solvent and UV resistance and maintains high impact resistance at temperatures below 0°C, as stated on the TDS.

Shelf life is 18 months; store in original packaging in a dry environment between 39.2°F and 100.4°F. Minimum recommended application temperature is 59°F. Minimum bond line pressure required is 14.5 psi.

What differentiates 5339 from other 53-series Acrylic Coating 40 grades at the same thickness?

5339 is the only grade in the 53-series Acrylic Coating 40 range supplied with a Bordeaux PE liner — all other 53-series grades use a Red PE liner. At 0.031" it is also the only gray Acrylic Coating 40 grade at that thickness, and achieves a higher peel adhesion (21 lb/in) than the white 5335 grade (13 lb/in) at the same thickness, with notably higher dynamic shear (93 vs. 63 lb/in²).

Why is peel adhesion important for acrylic foam tape selection?

Peel adhesion at 90° measures the resistance of the bond to delamination forces — the load mode most commonly encountered when assemblies flex, vibrate, or experience differential movement. Acrylic Coating 40 is formulated for strong initial tack and durable adhesion on high and medium energy substrates. 5339 achieves a 90° peel adhesion of 21 lb/in per ASTM D3330.

What is the operating temperature range for 5339?

    5339 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 212°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 320°F.

Is 5339 suitable for automotive or regulated environments?

No compliance standards are specified on the manufacturer's TDS for 5339. The 53-series is described as a general purpose tape designed for bonding high and medium energy substrates in automotive and industrial applications.

    How should 5339 be specified?

Specify grade (5339 / H-O part number SRM5339), thickness (0.031" ±15%), color (Gray), liner type (Bordeaux PE), substrate surface preparation requirements, bond line pressure (minimum 14.5 psi), primer requirements if applicable, dimensional tolerances, and finished format.
