    • Structural bonding of high and medium surface energy plastic components in low-temperature service environments where higher shear strength is required
    • Attachment of glass elements to metal or composite frames in assemblies subject to cold climate exposure
    • Bonding of aluminum and steel substrates where differential thermal expansion between dissimilar materials must be accommodated at low temperatures
    • Full-surface bonding of thin or textured substrates, including ceramics, where conformability and a tension-free bond are required
    • Replacement of mechanical fasteners in fabricated assemblies where sub-zero end strength and elevated shear resistance are design requirements

Common industries: general manufacturing, glazing and fenestration, transportation, construction, signage and display.

AFTC 5343 is a double sided acrylic foam tape using Acrylic Coating 41 on both faces — a formulation specifically suited to bonding high and medium surface energy substrates in low-temperature environments. It shares the same thickness, adhesive system, density, and temperature performance as AFTC 5351, but is available in Light Gray and delivers higher dynamic and tensile shear strength values of 85 lb/in² compared to 78 lb/in² for AFTC 5351.

It accommodates differential thermal expansion between dissimilar materials and allows full-surface, tension-free bonding of thin or textured substrates.

The tape demonstrates excellent resistance to solvents and UV exposure. As a pressure sensitive adhesive, a minimum bond line pressure of 14.5 psi applied by hand roller or mechanical presser is required for full adhesion. For low surface energy substrates, primer use is recommended; without primer the AFTC line requires up to 72 hours to reach end-strength, while a compatible primer reduces this to approximately 20 minutes. Shelf life is 18 months when stored in original packaging in a dry environment between 39.2°F and 100.4°F.

What differentiates AFTC 5343 from AFTC 5351, which shares the same thickness and adhesive system?

AFTC 5343 and AFTC 5351 share the same 0.047" thickness, Acrylic Coating 41 adhesive, density (50 lb/ft³), temperature ratings, and peel adhesion (22 lb/in). AFTC 5343 is Light Gray versus White for AFTC 5351, and delivers higher dynamic and tensile shear strength — 85 lb/in² compared to 78 lb/in². Color and shear strength are the differentiating factors between these two grades.

Why is peel adhesion important when selecting an acrylic foam tape?

Peel adhesion — measured here at 22 lb/in per ASTM D3330 — determines how effectively the tape resists being peeled or lifted from a bonded substrate under service loading. For assemblies operating in low-temperature environments, the retention of adequate peel adhesion at or below 0°C is particularly critical, as many adhesive systems lose bond strength significantly at sub-zero temperatures.

What is the operating temperature range for AFTC 5343?

    AFTC 5343 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 212°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 320°F.

Is AFTC 5343 suitable for outdoor or UV-exposed environments?

The TDS rates AFTC 5343 as having excellent UV resistance and excellent solvent resistance, and specifically notes excellent end strength at temperatures below 0°C. No specific regulatory compliance standards are listed on the TDS.

How should AFTC 5343 be specified?

Specify grade (AFTC 5343), thickness (0.047"), color (Light Gray), liner type (Red PE), dimensional tolerances, and finished format. Note any primer requirements for low surface energy substrates and confirm minimum application temperature of 59°F can be met at time of bonding.
