    • Bonding of high and medium surface energy plastics where a black tape at a 0.047″ bondline is required
    • Bonding to glass, steel, aluminum, and ceramics with high initial tack, very good shear strength, and very good long-term stability
    • Thin or textured surface bonding where full surface, tension-free adhesion is required
    • Double-sided bonding of dissimilar materials subject to differential thermal expansion
    • Low-temperature and long-term service assemblies requiring good inner strength and stable bond performance

Common industries: Automotive, Industrial Manufacturing, Construction, Electronics.

AFTC 5347 is the 0.047″ black grade in the AFTC 53-series general purpose Acrylic Coating 40 range. It is specifically designed for bonding high and medium surface energy substrates and is capable of absorbing the differing thermal expansions of two different materials.

The 53-series is described on the TDS as having a very high initial tack, very good plasticizer resistance, and the adaptability to bond thin or textured surfaces full surface and tension free. The tape is supplied in black (gray core with black adhesive) with a Red PE liner.

The product features section on the TDS highlights very good shear strength, good inner strength, and very good long-term stability — language that differs slightly from the impact resistance emphasis used on other 53-series grades.

AFTC 5347 achieves a 90° peel adhesion of 23 lb/in per ASTM D3330, a dynamic shear strength of 85 lb/in² per ASTM D1002, and a tensile strength of 85 lb/in² per ASTM D897. Static shear strength at 72°F is 1,000 grams (per 1/2 in² for 10,000 minutes / 7 days) per ASTM 3654. The tape offers excellent solvent and UV resistance. Shelf life is 18 months; store in original packaging in a dry environment between 39.2°F and 100.4°F. Minimum recommended application temperature is 59°F. Minimum bond line pressure required is 14.5 psi.

What differentiates 5347 from 5345 and 5341 at the same thickness in the 53-series?

5347 is the black (gray core / black adhesive) grade at 0.047", sharing the same peel adhesion (23 lb/in) and dynamic and tensile strength (85 lb/in²) as the white 5345. Unlike 5345, 5347 lists a static shear at 72°F of 1,000 grams (vs. 1,500 grams for 5345). Compared to 5341, which is gray with a Conformable Acrylic Foam core and lists water resistance and no bi-metal corrosion, 5347 uses a standard Acrylic Adhesive Foam Core and does not list those environmental properties.

Why is peel adhesion important for acrylic foam tape selection?

Peel adhesion at 90° measures the resistance of the bond to delamination forces — the load mode most commonly encountered when assemblies flex, vibrate, or experience differential movement. Acrylic Coating 40 is formulated for strong initial tack and durable adhesion on high and medium energy substrates. 5347 achieves a 90° peel adhesion of 23 lb/in per ASTM D3330.

What is the operating temperature range for 5347?

    5347 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 212°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 320°F.

Is 5347 suitable for automotive or regulated environments?

No compliance standards are specified on the manufacturer's TDS for 5347. The 53-series is described as a general purpose tape designed for bonding high and medium energy substrates in automotive and industrial applications.

    How should 5347 be specified?

Specify grade (5347 / H-O part number SRM5347), thickness (0.047" ±10%), color (Black / gray core, black adhesive), liner type (Red PE), substrate surface preparation requirements, bond line pressure (minimum 14.5 psi), primer requirements if applicable, dimensional tolerances, and finished format.
