    • Pre-powder coating bonding of stainless steel and galvanized steel assemblies where the tape must survive oven temperatures and chemical pre-treatment baths
    • Structural bonding of anodized and raw aluminum components that undergo the full powder coat process after assembly
    • Metal assembly bonding applications requiring the tape to remain viscoelastic and functional after powder coat process exposure
    • Mid-range bondline bonding where 0.031″ provides additional gap accommodation over the thinner 6004 while maintaining full powder coat resistance
    • Applications requiring a balance of peel adhesion, shear strength, and tensile performance in the 60xx powder coat resistant series

Common industries: Metal fabrication, architectural metalwork, industrial equipment manufacturing, powder coating operations.

AFTC 6008 is a 0.031″ thick grade in the 60xx series of powder coat resistant double-sided acrylic foam tapes, engineered specifically for metal assemblies that are bonded prior to the powder coating process. Unlike standard acrylic foam tapes, the 60xx series is formulated to survive both the extreme temperatures of the powder coat oven and the chemical pre-treatment baths that bonded parts pass through before coating.

After completing the full powder coat process, AFTC 6008 retains its viscoelastic properties — continuing to absorb differential thermal expansion between the two bonded materials and maintaining bond integrity. The acrylic adhesive foam core is closed cell and carries a permanent adhesive system on both faces, protected by a red PE liner.

High inner strength, good shear, and good peel properties are cited as key features on the TDS. The tape exhibits excellent UV resistance and excellent solvent resistance. Static shear strength is 1,000 grams per 1/2 square inch held for 10,000 minutes (7 days) at 72°F, and 500 grams at 150°F and 200°F. A minimum bond-line pressure of 14.5 psi must be applied in a rolling fashion.

Full end-strength is reached within 72 hours; use of H-O Products Primer 33 or Primer 101 reduces this to approximately 20 minutes. Minimum recommended application temperature is 59°F.

What differentiates AFTC 6008 from adjacent grades 6004 and 6011 in the 60xx series?

    AFTC 6008 is 0.031" thick (±15%), positioned between 6004 (0.015", 110 lb/in² tensile, 12 lb/in peel) and 6011 (0.047", 84 lb/in² tensile, 16 lb/in peel). It delivers 89 lb/in² dynamic shear, 92 lb/in² tensile, and 14 lb/in peel — intermediate values across the series. Both 6008 and 6004 share the same temperature ratings (428°F short-term / 320°F long-term), while 6011 carries a higher short-term rating of 464°F. AFTC 6008 is the preferred choice where a mid-range bondline thickness is required with a balance of all three adhesion properties.

Why is peel adhesion important for a tape used in powder coating applications?

In powder coating workflows, the tape bond must survive not only the oven heat cycle but also the chemical pre-treatment baths before any topcoat is applied. A tape that loses peel adhesion during this process will allow the bond to delaminate at its edges — potentially before or during coating — leading to assembly failure. AFTC 6008 is formulated to retain its peel adhesion (14 lb/in) and remain viscoelastic through the full powder coat process, ensuring the bond remains intact from assembly through finished coating.

What is the operating temperature range for AFTC 6008?

AFTC 6008 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 320°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 428°F, as listed on the TDS.

Is AFTC 6008 suitable for use in powder coating manufacturing processes?

Yes. AFTC 6008 is specifically designed for metal assemblies that are powder coated after bonding. The TDS states it resists the extremely high temperatures of the powder coat oven and the chemical baths used in the powder coating process, and remains viscoelastic after this process. No additional regulatory compliance standards are stated on the TDS.

How should AFTC 6008 be specified?

Specify grade (AFTC 6008), thickness (0.031"), color (gray), compliance requirements, dimensional tolerances, adhesive side (double), liner type (red PE liner), and finished format.
