    • Very thin-profile primer-free bonding to powder coated metal surfaces where bond-line height is critically constrained
    • Adhesive attachment to low surface energy plastics — including PP and PE — in assemblies where tape thickness must be minimized
    • Bonding to coated glass, ceramics, and silicone substrates requiring a near-invisible bond line
    • Replacement of mechanical fasteners — including rivets, screws, spot-welds, and liquid adhesives — on LSE substrates in fabricated assemblies
    • Conformable adhesive mounting to Teflon or other difficult-to-bond surfaces where a low-profile, primer-free solution is required

Common industries: automotive, general manufacturing, consumer products, signage and display, glazing and fenestration.

AFTC 6402 is a high performance conformable double sided acrylic foam tape from the 64 series, constructed with a closed cell acrylic adhesive foam core coated on both sides with Acrylic LSE Coating 60. At 0.008″ — the thinnest grade in the 64 series — it is developed for applications requiring a very low-profile bond line on a broad range of substrates, including difficult-to-bond LSE surfaces, without the use of a primer or adhesion promoter.

Good plasticizer resistance and very good adaptability are noted product characteristics. The TDS also lists this grade as suitable for replacing rivets, screws, spot-welds, and liquid adhesives. Note: all “Black+” tapes have a gray core and black adhesive.

The tape demonstrates excellent resistance to solvents and UV exposure and accommodates differential thermal expansion between dissimilar materials. Static shear data is provided only to 150°F — a narrower range than other 64-series grades. As a pressure sensitive adhesive, a minimum bond line pressure of 14.5 psi applied by hand roller or mechanical presser is required for full adhesion. Shelf life is 12 months when stored in original packaging in a dry environment between 40°F and 95°F.

What differentiates AFTC 6402 from AFTC 6406, which shares a similar adhesive system?

AFTC 6402 is the thinnest grade in the 64 series at 0.008" — less than one-third the thickness of AFTC 6406 at 0.025". It uses Acrylic LSE Coating 60 (with the "LSE" designation explicit in the adhesive type), has the highest dynamic shear strength in the series at 110 lb/in², and provides static shear data only to 150°F versus 250°F for AFTC 6406. It also has a shorter shelf life of 12 months and a narrower storage range of 40°F–95°F.

Why is peel adhesion important when selecting an acrylic foam tape?

Peel adhesion — measured here at 22 lb/in per ASTM D3330 — determines how effectively the tape resists being peeled or lifted from a bonded substrate under service loading. For LSE substrates where standard adhesives lose significant bond strength, achieving 22 lb/in peel without primer or surface treatment represents the core performance advantage of the Acrylic LSE Coating 60 formulation in this grade.

What is the operating temperature range for AFTC 6402?

    AFTC 6402 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 194°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 248°F.

Is AFTC 6402 suitable for outdoor or UV-exposed environments?

The TDS rates AFTC 6402 as having excellent UV resistance and excellent solvent resistance. No specific regulatory compliance standards are listed on the TDS.

How should AFTC 6402 be specified?

Specify grade (AFTC 6402), thickness (0.008"), color (Black+), liner type (Red PE), dimensional tolerances, and finished format. Confirm substrate type and surface energy level, and confirm minimum application temperature of 65°F can be met at time of bonding.
