- Primer-free bonding to powder coated metal surfaces in industrial or consumer product assemblies
- Adhesive attachment to low surface energy plastics — including PP and PE — where standard acrylic foam tapes require surface preparation
- Bonding to coated glass, ceramics, and silicone substrates in architectural or display applications
- Adhesive mounting to Teflon surfaces in industrial or sealing applications
- Thin-profile LSE substrate bonding where a longer static shear temperature range (to 250°F) is required
Common industries: automotive, general manufacturing, signage and display, glazing and fenestration, consumer products.
AFTC 6404 is a high performance double sided acrylic foam tape from the 64 series, constructed with a closed cell acrylic adhesive foam core coated on both sides with Acrylic LSE Coating 60 — a formulation developed specifically for excellent initial tack and adhesion on low surface energy surfaces without the need for a primer or adhesion promoter.
At 0.016″ thickness, it sits between the ultra-thin AFTC 6402 (0.008″) and the AFTC 6406 (0.025″) within the 64-series thickness progression. Good plasticizer resistance and very good adaptability are noted product characteristics. Note: all “Black+” tapes have a gray core and black adhesive.
The tape demonstrates excellent resistance to solvents and UV exposure and accommodates differential thermal expansion between dissimilar materials. Static shear data extends to 250°F, the widest temperature range in the 64-series. As a pressure sensitive adhesive, a minimum bond line pressure of 14.5 psi applied by hand roller or mechanical presser is required for full adhesion. Shelf life is 18 months when stored in original packaging in a dry environment between 39.2°F and 100.4°F.
What differentiates AFTC 6404 from AFTC 6402 and AFTC 6406, which are the adjacent thicknesses in the 64 series?
AFTC 6404 at 0.016" sits between AFTC 6402 (0.008") and AFTC 6406 (0.025"). Unlike AFTC 6402, which provides static shear data only to 150°F, AFTC 6404 provides data through 250°F — matching the full range of AFTC 6406 and 6408. It also carries an 18-month shelf life and the wider 39.2°F–100.4°F storage range, shared with AFTC 6406 and 6408 but not AFTC 6402. Its peel adhesion of 15 lb/in is the lowest in the 64-series, while its dynamic shear of 107 lb/in² is among the highest.
Why is peel adhesion important when selecting an acrylic foam tape?
Peel adhesion — measured here at 15 lb/in per ASTM D3330 — determines how effectively the tape resists being peeled or lifted from a bonded substrate under service loading. For LSE substrates where standard adhesives provide little to no adhesion, even 15 lb/in of peel without primer represents meaningful bonding capability. Applications where shear and tensile loads dominate over peel forces are particularly well suited to this grade's high shear (107 lb/in²) and tensile (105 lb/in²) performance profile.
What is the operating temperature range for AFTC 6404?
AFTC 6404 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 194°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 248°F.
Is AFTC 6404 suitable for outdoor or UV-exposed environments?
The TDS rates AFTC 6404 as having excellent UV resistance and excellent solvent resistance. No specific regulatory compliance standards are listed on the TDS.
How should AFTC 6404 be specified?
Specify grade (AFTC 6404), thickness (0.016"), color (Black+), liner type (Red PE), dimensional tolerances, and finished format. Confirm substrate type and surface energy level, and confirm minimum application temperature of 59°F can be met at time of bonding.
