    • Primer-free bonding to powder coated metal surfaces in industrial or consumer product assemblies
    • Adhesive attachment to low surface energy plastics — including PP and PE — where standard acrylic foam tapes require surface preparation
    • Bonding to coated glass, ceramics, and silicone substrates in architectural or display applications
    • Adhesive mounting to Teflon surfaces in industrial or sealing applications
    • Thin-profile structural bonding of LSE substrates where bond-line height is constrained

Common industries: automotive, general manufacturing, signage and display, glazing and fenestration, consumer products.

AFTC 6406 is a high performance double sided acrylic foam tape from the 64 series, constructed with a closed cell acrylic adhesive foam core coated on both sides with Acrylic Coating 60 — a formulation developed specifically for excellent initial tack and adhesion on low surface energy surfaces without the need for a primer or adhesion promoter.

At 0.025″ thickness, it is among the thinner grades in the 64 series and is suited to applications where a low-profile bond line is required on LSE substrates. Good plasticizer resistance and very good adaptability are noted product characteristics. Note: all “Black+” tapes have a gray core and black adhesive.

The tape demonstrates excellent resistance to solvents and UV exposure and accommodates differential thermal expansion between dissimilar materials. As a pressure sensitive adhesive, a minimum bond line pressure of 14.5 psi applied by hand roller or mechanical presser is required for full adhesion. Shelf life is 18 months when stored in original packaging in a dry environment between 39.2°F and 100.4°F.

What differentiates AFTC 6406 from standard 53-series grades such as AFTC 5355 or AFTC 5357?

AFTC 6406 uses Acrylic Coating 60 — an LSE-specific formulation — compared to Acrylic Coating 40 used in the 53-series. This enables primer-free bonding to low surface energy substrates including PP, PE, silicones, Teflon, and powder coatings, which require surface preparation or primer when using standard Coating 40 grades. The 64-series also has a lower density (37 lb/ft³ vs. 52 lb/ft³), a lower long-term temperature rating (194°F vs. 212°F), and static shear data extending to 250°F.

Why is peel adhesion important when selecting an acrylic foam tape?

Peel adhesion — measured here at 18 lb/in per ASTM D3330 — determines how effectively the tape resists being peeled or lifted from a bonded substrate under service loading. For LSE substrates, achieving adequate peel adhesion without primer or surface treatment is the primary performance challenge; the Acrylic Coating 60 formulation is specifically developed to deliver this on difficult-to-bond surfaces.

What is the operating temperature range for AFTC 6406?

    AFTC 6406 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 194°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 248°F.

Is AFTC 6406 suitable for outdoor or UV-exposed environments?

The TDS rates AFTC 6406 as having excellent UV resistance and excellent solvent resistance. No specific regulatory compliance standards are listed on the TDS.

How should AFTC 6406 be specified?

Specify grade (AFTC 6406), thickness (0.025"), color (Black+), liner type (Red PE), dimensional tolerances, and finished format. Confirm substrate type and surface energy level, and confirm minimum application temperature of 59°F can be met at time of bonding.
