    • Ultra-thin bonding of small molded plastic and rubber components to glass and glass/epoxy substrates
    • Low-profile adhesive attachment of trim and decorative elements to anodized and coated aluminum surfaces
    • Near-invisible tape bonding of lightweight parts to stainless steel and galvanized steel assemblies
    • Double-sided mounting of thin-profile components where black tape color is required against dark substrates
    • Permanent adhesive joining of small-format parts to coated aluminum in automotive and consumer product applications

Common industries: Automotive, consumer electronics, construction, fenestration, industrial manufacturing.

AFTC 820 is a 0.008″ ultra-thin double-sided acrylic foam tape designed for bonding lightweight, thin, and small parts to glass, metal, and coated substrates where a near-invisible adhesive profile is required. The closed-cell acrylic foam core and permanent adhesive system provide reliable bond strength at a low profile.

The Black+ color (gray core with black adhesive) is suited for applications where tape visibility against dark or opaque substrates must be minimized. At 0.008″, AFTC 820 offers slightly greater foam body than the 0.006″ grades, providing marginally increased conformability while remaining functionally invisible.

The tape provides excellent UV resistance, aging resistance, and solvent resistance for durable performance in exterior and chemically exposed environments. A minimum bond-line pressure of 14.5 psi applied by hand roller or mechanical presser is required. IPA is recommended for lightly to moderately contaminated surfaces; heavily contaminated surfaces require MEK, Heptan, or Acetone followed by an IPA wipe. Raw aluminum must be abraded prior to bonding.

Primer is recommended for low surface energy substrates including polymers, powder-coated metals, and porous materials, reducing cure time from up to 72 hours to approximately 20 minutes. Shelf life is 18 months stored in original packaging between 39.2°F and 100.4°F.

What differentiates AFTC 820 from AFTC 821?

AFTC 820 and 821 share the same 0.008" thickness, closed cell acrylic adhesive construction, and identical performance values, but differ in color: 820 is Black+ (gray core with black adhesive) and 821 is White. Color is the sole differentiating factor — select 820 where black tape is required to minimize visibility against dark or opaque substrates.

Why is peel adhesion important when selecting this tape?

Peel adhesion is the primary bond strength indicator for ultra-thin tapes, directly determining whether the tape will hold under vibration, thermal cycling, and mechanical stress in service. For AFTC 820, the 90° peel adhesion of 15 lb/in confirms strong interfacial bonding at a 0.008" total profile — higher than the 0.006" grades in the same series.

What is the operating temperature range for AFTC 820?

    AFTC 820 has a minimum temperature resistance of −40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 212°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 320°F.

Is AFTC 820 suitable for exterior or UV-exposed environments?

The TDS rates UV resistance, aging resistance, and solvent resistance as Excellent. No specific regulatory compliance standards are listed on the TDS for this material.

How should AFTC 820 be specified?

Specify grade (AFTC 820), thickness (0.008"), color (Black+), compliance requirements, dimensional tolerances, and finished format.
