AFTC 821 is a 0.008″ ultra-thin double-sided acrylic foam tape designed for permanent adhesive bonding of lightweight, thin, and small components to glass, metal, and coated substrates. The closed-cell acrylic foam core and permanent adhesive system provide strong, durable bonds at an extremely low profile — making the tape functionally invisible in most finished assemblies. The White color is suited for applications where tape color must blend with light-colored, white, or translucent substrates and assemblies.
The tape provides excellent UV resistance, aging resistance, and solvent resistance for durable performance in exterior and chemically exposed environments. A minimum bond-line pressure of 14.5 psi applied by hand roller or mechanical presser is required for maximum adhesion. IPA is recommended for lightly to moderately contaminated surfaces; heavily contaminated surfaces require MEK, Heptan, or Acetone followed by an IPA wipe.
Raw aluminum must be abraded before bonding to displace embedded processing oils. Primer is recommended for low surface energy substrates including polymers, powder-coated metals, and porous materials, reducing cure time from up to 72 hours to approximately 20 minutes. Shelf life is 18 months stored in original packaging between 39.2°F and 100.4°F.
What differentiates AFTC 821 from AFTC 820?
AFTC 821 and 820 are identical in thickness (0.008"), adhesive construction, and all performance values. The sole distinction is color: 821 is White, while 820 is Black+ (gray core with black adhesive). AFTC 821 is selected when white tape is required to blend with light-colored or translucent assemblies.
Why is peel adhesion important when selecting this tape?
For ultra-thin tapes, peel adhesion is the primary measure of whether the bond will hold under real service conditions including vibration, thermal movement, and mechanical loading. For AFTC 821, the 90° peel adhesion of 15 lb/in confirms robust interfacial bond strength at just 0.008" total thickness, making it an effective adhesive solution where low profile and reliable bonding are both required.
What is the operating temperature range for AFTC 821?
AFTC 821 has a minimum temperature resistance of −40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 212°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 320°F.
Is AFTC 821 suitable for exterior or UV-exposed environments?
The TDS rates UV resistance, aging resistance, and solvent resistance as Excellent. No specific regulatory compliance standards are listed on the TDS for this material.
How should AFTC 821 be specified?
Specify grade (AFTC 821), thickness (0.008"), color (White), compliance requirements, dimensional tolerances, and finished format.
