- Bonding of lightweight, thin, and small high and medium surface energy plastic molded components in modern electronic assembly applications with difficult-to-bond surfaces
- Adhesive mounting of glass or ceramic components in assemblies where high dynamic shear strength and standard temperature service are required
- Structural bonding of aluminum or steel components where 105 lb/in² dynamic shear performance and a black bond line are design requirements
- Low-profile adhesive attachment of lightweight parts in consumer electronics where a virtually invisible, black bond line is preferred
- Bonding of molded plastic parts on high and medium energy surfaces in electronic assembly where UV and aging resistance are required
Common industries: electronics, consumer products, automotive, general manufacturing.
AFTC 8402 is a double sided acrylic foam tape from the 84 series, constructed with an acrylic adhesive foam core coated on both sides with Acrylic Coating 40. Like other 84-series grades, it is designed to be virtually invisible in application — allowing the use of lightweight, thin, and small materials in many shapes and sizes with good performance on molded parts — and is specifically recommended for more difficult-to-bond surfaces as used in today’s modern electronic assembly industry.
AFTC 8402 is the Black+ option within the 84 series at standard temperature ratings: unlike AFTC 8403 and 8404, which carry elevated temperature ratings of 248°F long-term and 374°F short-term, AFTC 8402 is rated at 212°F long-term and 320°F short-term — matching standard AFTC grade temperature performance. It delivers dynamic and tensile shear strength of 105 lb/in², matching the highest shear values in the 84 series.
Note: all “Black+” tapes have a gray core and black adhesive.
The tape demonstrates excellent resistance to solvents and UV exposure, and lists excellent UV, aging, solvent, and high-temperature resistance (+100°C to +160°C) as product features. As a pressure sensitive adhesive, a minimum bond line pressure of 14.5 psi applied by hand roller or mechanical presser is required. For low surface energy substrates, primer use is recommended; the AFTC line requires up to 72 hours to reach end-strength without primer, which is reduced to approximately 20 minutes with a compatible primer.
Shelf life is 18 months when stored in original packaging in a dry environment between 39.2°F and 100.4°F.
What differentiates AFTC 8402 from AFTC 8404, which shares the same color and thickness?
AFTC 8402 and AFTC 8404 are both 0.09" ±15% Black+ tapes in the 84 series, both recommended for difficult-to-bond surfaces in electronic assembly. The critical difference is temperature rating: AFTC 8402 is rated at 212°F long-term and 320°F short-term — standard AFTC temperature performance — while AFTC 8404 carries the elevated 248°F long-term and 374°F short-term ratings. AFTC 8402 also delivers higher dynamic and tensile shear at 105 lb/in² versus 99 lb/in² and 102 lb/in² for AFTC 8404.
Why is peel adhesion important when selecting an acrylic foam tape?
Peel adhesion — measured here at 17 lb/in per ASTM D3330 — determines how effectively the tape resists being peeled or lifted from a bonded substrate under service loading. For the 84-series applications involving thin, lightweight molded parts and difficult-to-bond surfaces in electronic assembly, the high dynamic shear strength (105 lb/in²) is typically the dominant performance parameter; peel behavior must still be considered in any design where lifting or peeling forces may act on the bond line.
What is the operating temperature range for AFTC 8402?
AFTC 8402 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 212°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 320°F. The TDS describes its high-temperature resistance range as +100°C to +160°C (212°F to 320°F).
Is AFTC 8402 suitable for outdoor or UV-exposed environments?
The TDS rates AFTC 8402 as having excellent UV resistance and excellent solvent resistance, and lists excellent UV, aging, solvent, and high-temperature resistance as a product feature. No specific regulatory compliance standards are listed on the TDS.
How should AFTC 8402 be specified?
Specify grade (AFTC 8402), thickness (0.09"), color (Black+), liner type (Red PE), dimensional tolerances, and finished format. Confirm substrate type, surface energy level, and surface preparation requirements for difficult-to-bond substrates. Confirm minimum application temperature of 59°F can be met at time of bonding.
