AFTC AM9404 is the thinnest grade in the AFTC acrylic foam tape range at 0.016″. It is constructed with an acrylic adhesive foam core coated on both sides with Acrylic Coating 47 permanent adhesive, supplied with a Bordeaux PE liner.

The tape is described as a very strong tape with excellent initial tack and adhesion performance during application, and is specifically noted as ideal for lacquered parts and other coatings in the automotive industry as well as for bonding to high and medium surface energy substrates including plastics, glass, steel, aluminum, and ceramics.

AM9404 achieves a 90° peel adhesion of 14 lb/in per ASTM D3330, a dynamic shear strength of 92 lb/in² per ASTM D1002, and a tensile strength of 107 lb/in² per ASTM D897 — the highest tensile strength in the AFTC range. Static shear strength at 72°F is 1,000 grams (per 1/2 in² for 10,000 minutes / 7 days) per ASTM 3654. The tape offers excellent solvent and UV resistance and is rated for long-term use to 212°F and short-term to 320°F.

Shelf life is 18 months; store in original packaging in a dry environment between 39.2°F and 100.4°F. Minimum recommended application temperature is 59°F. Minimum bond line pressure required is 14.5 psi, applied by hand roller or mechanical presser.

What differentiates AM9404 from thicker AFTC grades such as AM9406 and AM9408?

AM9404 is the thinnest grade in the AFTC range at 0.016", making it suited for tight-tolerance assemblies where bondline thickness must be minimized. It carries the highest tensile strength in the range at 107 lb/in² and the highest dynamic shear strength at 92 lb/in², while its 90° peel adhesion of 14 lb/in is the lowest in the range — reflecting the general trade-off between thickness, conformability, and peel performance across the AFTC series.

Why is peel adhesion important for acrylic foam tape selection?

Peel adhesion measures the force required to peel the tape from a substrate at 90°, which is the load mode most commonly encountered in service when bonded assemblies experience differential movement, flexing, or edge-lifting forces. A higher peel adhesion indicates greater resistance to peeling under these conditions. AM9404 has a 90° peel adhesion of 14 lb/in per ASTM D3330.

What is the operating temperature range for AM9404?

    AM9404 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 212°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 320°F.

Is AM9404 suitable for automotive or regulated environments?

No compliance standards are specified on the manufacturer's TDS for AM9404. The product description specifically references suitability for lacquered parts and coatings in the automotive industry based on its adhesion and adaptability characteristics.

    How should AM9404 be specified?

Specify grade (AM9404 / H-O part number SRMAM9404), thickness (0.016" ±15%), liner type (Bordeaux PE), substrate surface preparation requirements, bond line pressure (minimum 14.5 psi), primer requirements if applicable, dimensional tolerances, and finished format.
