    • Bonding to lacquered automotive parts and coatings where excellent initial tack and adaptability are required
    • Attachment of high and medium surface energy plastic components in automotive assemblies
    • Bonding to glass, steel, aluminum, and ceramic substrates requiring increased peel adhesion over thinner grades
    • Double-sided structural bonding where a 0.025″ bondline thickness and the highest dynamic shear in the range are required
    • UV- and solvent-resistant bonding in exterior or chemically exposed environments

AFTC AM9406 is the second thinnest grade in the AFTC acrylic foam tape range at 0.025″. It is constructed with an acrylic adhesive foam core coated on both sides with Acrylic Coating 47 permanent adhesive, supplied with a Bordeaux PE liner.

The tape delivers very strong bonding with excellent initial tack and adhesion performance during application, and is specifically noted as ideal for lacquered parts and other coatings in the automotive industry as well as for bonding to high and medium surface energy substrates including plastics, glass, steel, aluminum, and ceramics.

AM9406 achieves a 90° peel adhesion of 17 lb/in per ASTM D3330, a dynamic shear strength of 96 lb/in² per ASTM D1002 — the highest in the AFTC range — and a tensile strength of 107 lb/in² per ASTM D897. Static shear strength at 72°F is 1,000 grams (per 1/2 in² for 10,000 minutes / 7 days) per ASTM 3654. The tape offers excellent solvent and UV resistance and is rated for long-term use to 212°F and short-term to 320°F.

Shelf life is 18 months; store in original packaging in a dry environment between 39.2°F and 100.4°F. Minimum recommended application temperature is 59°F. Minimum bond line pressure required is 14.5 psi, applied by hand roller or mechanical presser.

What differentiates AM9406 from AM9404 and AM9408 in the AFTC range?

AM9406 at 0.025" provides higher peel adhesion (17 lb/in) than the thinner AM9404 (14 lb/in) while carrying the highest dynamic shear strength in the AFTC range at 96 lb/in² — outperforming both AM9404 (92 lb/in²) and the thicker AM9408 (90 lb/in²). It shares the same tensile strength as AM9404 at 107 lb/in². AM9406 is the optimal choice when both elevated peel adhesion and maximum shear resistance are required simultaneously.

Why is peel adhesion important for acrylic foam tape selection?

Peel adhesion measures the force required to remove the tape from a substrate at a 90° angle — the load mode most commonly encountered when bonded assemblies experience differential movement, vibration, or edge-lifting forces. Higher peel adhesion indicates greater resistance to delamination under these conditions. AM9406 achieves a 90° peel adhesion of 17 lb/in per ASTM D3330.

What is the operating temperature range for AM9406?

    AM9406 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 212°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 320°F.

Is AM9406 suitable for automotive or regulated environments?

No compliance standards are specified on the manufacturer's TDS for AM9406. The product description specifically references suitability for lacquered parts and coatings in the automotive industry based on its adhesion and adaptability characteristics.

    How should AM9406 be specified?

Specify grade (AM9406 / H-O part number SRMAM9406), thickness (0.025" ±15%), liner type (Bordeaux PE), substrate surface preparation requirements, bond line pressure (minimum 14.5 psi), primer requirements if applicable, dimensional tolerances, and finished format.
