- Bonding to lacquered automotive parts and coatings where a thicker bondline and high peel adhesion are required
- Attachment of high and medium surface energy plastic components requiring improved gap-filling over thinner AFTC grades
- Bonding to glass, steel, aluminum, and ceramic substrates where 20 lb/in peel resistance is the selection criterion
- Double-sided structural bonding requiring a 0.047″ bondline with ±10% thickness tolerance
- UV- and solvent-resistant bonding applications in exterior or harsh chemical environments
Common industries: Automotive, Industrial Manufacturing, Construction, Electronics.
AFTC AM9412 is the second thickest grade in the AFTC acrylic foam tape range at 0.047″. It is constructed with an acrylic adhesive foam core coated on both sides with Acrylic Coating 47 permanent adhesive, supplied with a Bordeaux PE liner.
The tape delivers very strong bonding with excellent initial tack and adhesion performance during application, and is noted as ideal for lacquered parts and other coatings in the automotive industry as well as for bonding to high and medium surface energy substrates including plastics, glass, steel, aluminum, and ceramics. The thickness tolerance tightens to ±10% at this grade, compared to ±15% for thinner grades in the range.
AM9412 achieves a 90° peel adhesion of 20 lb/in per ASTM D3330, a dynamic shear strength of 85 lb/in² per ASTM D1002, and a tensile strength of 85 lb/in² per ASTM D897. Static shear strength at 72°F is 1,000 grams (per 1/2 in² for 10,000 minutes / 7 days) per ASTM 3654. The tape offers excellent solvent and UV resistance and is rated for long-term use to 212°F and short-term to 320°F.
Shelf life is 18 months; store in original packaging in a dry environment between 39.2°F and 100.4°F. Minimum recommended application temperature is 59°F. Minimum bond line pressure required is 14.5 psi, applied by hand roller or mechanical presser.
What differentiates AM9412 from AM9408 and AM9416 in the AFTC range?
AM9412 at 0.047" provides higher peel adhesion (20 lb/in) than AM9408 (19 lb/in) and lower shear and tensile strength (85 lb/in² vs. 90/92 lb/in²). The thickness tolerance tightens to ±10% at this grade compared to ±15% for thinner grades. Compared to AM9416 (0.062"), AM9412 offers slightly higher shear and tensile values (85 vs. 79 lb/in²) with marginally lower peel adhesion (20 vs. 22 lb/in). AM9412 is suited for applications requiring a thicker bondline than AM9408 with a tighter dimensional tolerance.
Why is peel adhesion important for acrylic foam tape selection?
Peel adhesion at 90° measures the resistance of the tape bond to delamination forces — the mode most relevant when bonded assemblies flex, vibrate, or experience differential expansion. A higher peel value indicates greater resistance to bond initiation failure under these service conditions. AM9412 achieves a 90° peel adhesion of 20 lb/in per ASTM D3330.
What is the operating temperature range for AM9412?
AM9412 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 212°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 320°F.
Is AM9412 suitable for automotive or regulated environments?
No compliance standards are specified on the manufacturer's TDS for AM9412. The product description specifically references suitability for lacquered parts and coatings in the automotive industry based on its adhesion and adaptability characteristics.
How should AM9412 be specified?
Specify grade (AM9412 / H-O part number SRMAM9412), thickness (0.047" ±10%), liner type (Bordeaux PE), substrate surface preparation requirements, bond line pressure (minimum 14.5 psi), primer requirements if applicable, dimensional tolerances, and finished format.
