    • Bonding to lacquered automotive parts and coatings requiring the maximum peel adhesion and bondline thickness in the AFTC range
    • Attachment of components where surface irregularities or gaps require the greatest gap-filling capability in the range
    • Bonding to glass, steel, aluminum, and ceramic substrates where 22 lb/in peel resistance is the selection criterion
    • Double-sided structural bonding requiring a 0.062″ bondline with ±10% thickness tolerance
    • UV- and solvent-resistant bonding in exterior or harsh chemical environments where maximum peel performance is the primary requirement

AFTC AM9416 is the thickest grade in the AFTC acrylic foam tape range at 0.062″. It is constructed with an acrylic adhesive foam core coated on both sides with Acrylic Coating 47 permanent adhesive, supplied with a Bordeaux PE liner.

The tape delivers very strong bonding with excellent initial tack and adhesion performance during application, and is noted as ideal for lacquered parts and other coatings in the automotive industry as well as for bonding to high and medium surface energy substrates including plastics, glass, steel, aluminum, and ceramics. Its increased thickness provides the greatest bondline gap-filling capability in the range and the highest 90° peel adhesion.

AM9416 achieves a 90° peel adhesion of 22 lb/in per ASTM D3330 — the highest in the AFTC range — a dynamic shear strength of 79 lb/in² per ASTM D1002, and a tensile strength of 79 lb/in² per ASTM D897. Static shear strength at 72°F is 1,000 grams (per 1/2 in² for 10,000 minutes / 7 days) per ASTM 3654. The tape offers excellent solvent and UV resistance and is rated for long-term use to 212°F and short-term to 320°F.

Shelf life is 18 months; store in original packaging in a dry environment between 39.2°F and 100.4°F. Minimum recommended application temperature is 59°F. Minimum bond line pressure required is 14.5 psi, applied by hand roller or mechanical presser.

What differentiates AM9416 from AM9412 and thinner AFTC grades?

AM9416 is the thickest and highest peel adhesion grade in the AFTC range at 0.062" and 22 lb/in (90° peel per ASTM D3330). As the thickest grade, it provides the greatest bondline gap-filling capability. The trade-off is that its dynamic shear and tensile strength of 79 lb/in² are the lowest in the range, consistent with the inverse relationship between thickness and shear/tensile performance observed across the AFTC series.

Why is peel adhesion important for acrylic foam tape selection?

Peel adhesion at 90° measures the resistance of the bond to delamination forces acting at an angle to the bonded surface — the dominant failure mode in assemblies experiencing vibration, differential thermal movement, or edge-loading. A higher peel value means the bond initiates peeling less readily under service conditions. AM9416 carries the highest 90° peel adhesion in the AFTC range at 22 lb/in per ASTM D3330.

What is the operating temperature range for AM9416?

    AM9416 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 212°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 320°F.

Is AM9416 suitable for automotive or regulated environments?

No compliance standards are specified on the manufacturer's TDS for AM9416. The product description specifically references suitability for lacquered parts and coatings in the automotive industry based on its adhesion and adaptability characteristics.

    How should AM9416 be specified?

Specify grade (AM9416 / H-O part number SRMAM9416), thickness (0.062" ±10%), liner type (Bordeaux PE), substrate surface preparation requirements, bond line pressure (minimum 14.5 psi), primer requirements if applicable, dimensional tolerances, and finished format.
