AFTC AM9604 is the thinnest grade in the AFTC Acrylic Coating 66 LSE series, designed for applications requiring strong adhesion to low surface energy substrates. It uses Acrylic Coating 66 — a distinct adhesive system from the Acrylic Coating 47 used in the AM94xx and AM9430 grades — formulated for bonding to difficult substrates such as ceramics, silicones, Teflon, powder-coated metals, clearcoats, and ceramic car paints.

The tape is supplied in black (gray core with black adhesive) and is identified by a Red PE liner, distinguishing it visually from the Bordeaux-lined gray Coating 47 grades. The TDS notes that viscoelastic properties allow tensions in the adhesive seam to be distributed, enabling very durable bonding.

AM9604 achieves a 90° peel adhesion of 15 lb/in per ASTM D3330 and a dynamic shear strength of 107 lb/in² per ASTM D1002 — a high shear value in the AFTC range. Tensile strength is 105 lb/in² per ASTM D897. Static shear strength at 72°F is 1,000 grams and at 250°F is 250 grams (per 1/2 in² for 10,000 minutes / 7 days) per ASTM 3654. The tape offers excellent solvent and UV resistance.

Shelf life is 18 months; store in original packaging in a dry environment between 39.2°F and 100.4°F. Minimum recommended application temperature is 59°F. Minimum bond line pressure required is 14.5 psi.

What differentiates AM9604 from the AM94xx Acrylic Coating 47 grades?

AM9604 uses Acrylic Coating 66 — a distinct adhesive system specifically formulated for low surface energy substrates such as silicones, Teflon, powder coatings, clearcoats, and ceramic car paints that Acrylic Coating 47 grades are not designed to bond. AM9604 also has a lower density (37 lb/ft³ vs. 52 lb/ft³), a Red PE liner (vs. Bordeaux), and black tape color. Its temperature ratings are lower (194°F long-term, 248°F short-term vs. 212°F / 320°F for Coating 47 grades), and it includes a static shear value at 250°F not present on Coating 47 TDS documents.

Why is peel adhesion important for acrylic foam tape selection?

Peel adhesion at 90° measures the resistance of the bond to delamination forces — the load mode most relevant when assemblies flex, vibrate, or experience differential movement. For LSE substrates where surface energy inherently limits adhesion, the adhesive chemistry of Acrylic Coating 66 is formulated to maximize bond performance specifically on these difficult surfaces. AM9604 achieves a 90° peel adhesion of 15 lb/in per ASTM D3330.

What is the operating temperature range for AM9604?

    AM9604 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 194°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 248°F.

Is AM9604 suitable for automotive or regulated environments?

No compliance standards are specified on the manufacturer's TDS for AM9604. The TDS describes the tape as designed for automotive applications and specifically for LSE substrates including ceramic car paints, clearcoats, silicones, and Teflon.

    How should AM9604 be specified?

Specify grade (AM9604 / H-O part number SRMAM9604), thickness (0.016" ±15%), adhesive system (Acrylic Coating 66 / LSE), liner type (Red PE), substrate type and surface preparation requirements, bond line pressure (minimum 14.5 psi), primer requirements if applicable, dimensional tolerances, and finished format.
