    • Bonding to low surface energy substrates including silicones, Teflon, powder coatings, clearcoats, and ceramic car paints
    • Attachment of automotive trim to ceramic-coated or clearcoated vehicle surfaces where increased bondline thickness over AM9604 is required
    • Bonding to medium and low surface energy plastics in automotive and industrial assemblies
    • Double-sided structural bonding to LSE substrates requiring high dynamic shear strength and increased conformability
    • UV- and solvent-resistant bonding on exterior automotive applications involving difficult or coated surfaces

AFTC AM9606 is the 0.025″ grade in the AFTC Acrylic Coating 66 LSE series, providing slightly increased bondline thickness and higher peel adhesion compared to the thinner AM9604 grade. Like all Coating 66 grades, it is formulated for adhesion to low surface energy substrates — ceramics, silicones, Teflon, powder-coated metals, clearcoats, and ceramic car paints — that standard Acrylic Coating 47 grades are not designed for.

The tape is supplied in black (gray core with black adhesive) with a Red PE liner. The TDS notes that viscoelastic properties allow tensions in the adhesive seam to be distributed, enabling very durable bonding.

AM9606 achieves a 90° peel adhesion of 16 lb/in per ASTM D3330, a dynamic shear strength of 104 lb/in² per ASTM D1002, and a tensile strength of 105 lb/in² per ASTM D897. Static shear strength at 72°F is 1,000 grams and at 250°F is 250 grams (per 1/2 in² for 10,000 minutes / 7 days) per ASTM 3654. The tape offers excellent solvent and UV resistance. Shelf life is 18 months; store in original packaging in a dry environment between 39.2°F and 100.4°F.

Minimum recommended application temperature is 59°F. Minimum bond line pressure required is 14.5 psi.

What differentiates AM9606 from AM9604 in the AFTC Acrylic Coating 66 LSE series?

AM9606 at 0.025" provides higher peel adhesion (16 lb/in) than AM9604 (15 lb/in) and slightly greater bondline thickness, offering improved conformability on irregular surfaces. Dynamic shear strength at 104 lb/in² is marginally lower than AM9604's 107 lb/in². Both grades share the same Acrylic Coating 66 adhesive system, Red PE liner, 37 lb/ft³ density, and LSE substrate compatibility — the distinction is thickness and the resulting peel/shear balance.

Why is peel adhesion important for acrylic foam tape selection?

Peel adhesion at 90° measures the resistance of the bond to delamination forces — particularly relevant on LSE substrates where surface energy inherently limits adhesion. The Acrylic Coating 66 adhesive system is specifically formulated to maximize adhesion on these difficult surfaces. AM9606 achieves a 90° peel adhesion of 16 lb/in per ASTM D3330.

What is the operating temperature range for AM9606?

    AM9606 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 194°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 248°F.

Is AM9606 suitable for automotive or regulated environments?

No compliance standards are specified on the manufacturer's TDS for AM9606. The TDS describes the tape as designed for automotive applications and specifically for LSE substrates including ceramic car paints, clearcoats, silicones, and Teflon.

    How should AM9606 be specified?

Specify grade (AM9606 / H-O part number SRMAM9606), thickness (0.025" ±15%), adhesive system (Acrylic Coating 66 / LSE), liner type (Red PE), substrate type and surface preparation requirements, bond line pressure (minimum 14.5 psi), primer requirements if applicable, dimensional tolerances, and finished format.
