AFTC AM9804 is the thinnest grade in the AFTC Acrylic Coating 91 LSE series and the thinnest tape in the entire AFTC range at 0.015″. It is formulated with Acrylic Coating 91, a distinct adhesive system designed to conform to the highest standards for bonding to powder-coated surfaces, automotive lacquers, and low surface energy materials including PP, PP-EPDM, EPP, and TPE — without the use of a primer. It is supplied in black (gray core with black adhesive) with a Red PE liner.
AM9804 achieves a dynamic shear strength of 127 lb/in² per ASTM D1002 — the highest value in the entire AFTC product range — with a tensile strength of 104 lb/in² per ASTM D897 and a 90° peel adhesion of 13 lb/in per ASTM D3330. Static shear strength at 72°F is 1,000 grams (per 1/2 in² for 10,000 minutes / 7 days) per ASTM 3654.
The short-term temperature resistance of 212°F is lower than the 248°F listed for the thicker AM9806, AM9808, AM9811, and AM9815 grades. The tape offers excellent solvent and UV resistance. Shelf life is 18 months; store in original packaging in a dry environment between 39.2°F and 100.4°F. Minimum recommended application temperature is 59°F. Minimum bond line pressure required is 14.5 psi.
What differentiates AM9804 from thicker grades in the AFTC Acrylic Coating 91 series, and from Coating 66 grades at similar thicknesses?
AM9804 is the thinnest grade in the Coating 91 series at 0.015" and carries a dynamic shear strength of 127 lb/in² — the highest of any grade in the entire AFTC range. Its short-term temperature resistance of 212°F is lower than the 248°F listed for all other Coating 91 grades. Unlike the Coating 66 series, Coating 91 is specifically formulated to bond PP, PP-EPDM, EPP, and TPE without a primer, and targets electronic components, headlight washing systems, and parking sensors as specific automotive applications.
Why is peel adhesion important for acrylic foam tape selection?
Peel adhesion at 90° measures the resistance of the bond to delamination forces — the load mode most encountered when assemblies flex, vibrate, or experience differential movement. For LSE substrates including PP and TPE, Acrylic Coating 91 is specifically formulated to deliver adhesion without priming. AM9804 achieves a 90° peel adhesion of 13 lb/in per ASTM D3330.
What is the operating temperature range for AM9804?
AM9804 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 194°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 212°F.
Is AM9804 suitable for automotive or regulated environments?
No compliance standards are specified on the manufacturer's TDS for AM9804. The TDS describes the tape as conforming to the highest standards for automotive applications on LSE materials, powder-coated surfaces, and automotive lacquers, and states that it bonds these substrates without the use of a primer.
How should AM9804 be specified?
Specify grade (AM9804 / H-O part number SRMAM9804), thickness (0.015" ±15%), adhesive system (Acrylic Coating 91 / LSE primer-free), liner type (Red PE), substrate type and surface preparation requirements, bond line pressure (minimum 14.5 psi), dimensional tolerances, and finished format.
