    • Primer-free bonding to PP, PP-EPDM, EPP, and TPE automotive components requiring the maximum gap-filling bondline in the Coating 91 series
    • Bonding to powder-coated surfaces and automotive lacquers without surface priming at a 0.078″ bondline
    • Attachment of electronic components, headlight washing systems, and parking sensors to LSE vehicle surfaces with surface variation or gaps
    • Double-sided structural bonding to LSE substrates where the thickest Coating 91 grade is required
    • UV- and solvent-resistant bonding on exterior automotive applications involving difficult or low surface energy substrates

Common industries: Automotive, Electronics, Industrial Manufacturing.

AFTC AM9820 is the thickest grade in the AFTC Acrylic Coating 91 LSE series at 0.078″. It is formulated with Acrylic Coating 91 to conform to the highest standards for bonding to powder-coated surfaces, automotive lacquers, and low surface energy materials including PP, PP-EPDM, EPP, and TPE — without the use of a primer. The tape is supplied in black (gray core with black adhesive) with a Red PE liner, and provides the greatest gap-filling capability in the Coating 91 series.

AM9820 achieves a 90° peel adhesion of 20 lb/in per ASTM D3330, a dynamic shear strength of 99 lb/in² per ASTM D1002, and a tensile strength of 84 lb/in² per ASTM D897. Static shear strength at 72°F is 1,000 grams (per 1/2 in² for 10,000 minutes / 7 days) per ASTM 3654. The tape offers excellent solvent and UV resistance and is rated for short-term use to 248°F and long-term to 194°F.

Shelf life is 18 months; store in original packaging in a dry environment between 39.2°F and 100.4°F. Minimum recommended application temperature is 59°F. Minimum bond line pressure required is 14.5 psi.

What differentiates AM9820 from AM9815 and other Coating 91 grades?

AM9820 is the thickest grade in the AFTC Coating 91 series at 0.078", providing the greatest gap-filling capability in the range. Its peel adhesion of 20 lb/in matches AM9815, while its dynamic shear of 99 lb/in² is slightly lower than AM9815's 100 lb/in² and tensile strength of 84 lb/in² is lower than AM9815's 88 lb/in² — consistent with the trade-off between increasing thickness and mechanical performance across the Coating 91 series.

Why is peel adhesion important for acrylic foam tape selection?

Peel adhesion at 90° measures the resistance of the bond to delamination forces — the load mode most encountered when assemblies flex, vibrate, or experience differential movement. For LSE substrates including PP and TPE, Acrylic Coating 91 is formulated to deliver adhesion without priming. AM9820 achieves a 90° peel adhesion of 20 lb/in per ASTM D3330.

What is the operating temperature range for AM9820?

    AM9820 has a minimum temperature resistance of -40°F, a long-term temperature resistance of 194°F, and a short-term temperature resistance of 248°F.

Is AM9820 suitable for automotive or regulated environments?

No compliance standards are specified on the manufacturer's TDS for AM9820. The TDS describes the tape as conforming to the highest standards for automotive applications on LSE materials, powder-coated surfaces, and automotive lacquers, and states that it bonds these substrates without the use of a primer.

    How should AM9820 be specified?

Specify grade (AM9820 / H-O part number SRMAM9820), thickness (0.078" ±10%), adhesive system (Acrylic Coating 91 / LSE primer-free), liner type (Red PE), substrate type and surface preparation requirements, bond line pressure (minimum 14.5 psi), dimensional tolerances, and finished format.
