Common industries: Oil and gas, offshore, petrochemical, energy, power generation, industrial processing.
ArmaGel® HTF is a silica-aerogel blanket specifically engineered for passive fire protection (PFP) of pipework and equipment in energy, industrial process, and offshore oil and gas facilities. It is the only grade in the ArmaGel® product family designed and tested to UL 1709 (hydrocarbon pool fire) and ISO 22899-1 (jet fire) standards.
Compliant with ASTM C1728 Type III, Grade 1A, it achieves 120 minutes of fire protection per UL 1709 and 90 minutes per ISO 22899-1 jet fire in the tested configurations listed on the TDS — all UL fire tests were conducted at a UL laboratory under full UL witnessing; the jet fire test was conducted at an Efectis/France laboratory under full Efectis and UL witnessing.
Fire rating criteria for jet fire: temperature increase on steel pipe below 538 K over 90 minutes with no integrity failure during the full 180-minute test period. Available in a single standard thickness of 10 mm (0.4″) in roll form 1.5 m (59″) wide; multiple layers are used to achieve various fire ratings across different pipe and beam configurations.
Thermal conductivity is declared at 8 temperature points from 24°C to 371°C, with values provided in both W/(m·K) and Btu-in/(h-ft²-°F), measured under a load of 1.5 kPa (0.22 psi) per ASTM C177. The material is hydrophobic, passes ASTM C1763 water absorption at ≤8% by weight, and provides CUI protection. Corrosiveness of steel passes ASTM C1617 Procedure A with MLCR not exceeding that of a 5 ppm chloride solution on a carbon steel coupon.
Stress corrosion cracking passes ASTM C692 and ASTM C795 for use over austenitic steel. Health aspects are described on the TDS as neutral and asbestos free. Shelf life is maximum 3 years; storage requires indoor, clean and dry conditions away from direct sunlight. For operating temperatures above 400°C (752°F), a metallic foil barrier of 0.05 mm (0.002 in) thickness must be additionally installed per the TDS footnote.
Compliant with ASTM C1728 Type III, Grade 1A; UL 1709; ISO 22899-1; ASTM C411; ASTM C447; ASTM C165; ASTM C356; ASTM C692; ASTM C795; ASTM C1101; ASTM C1104; ASTM C1338; ASTM C1617; ASTM C1763; ASTM E84.
What differentiates ArmaGel® HTF from ArmaGel® HT, HTL, DT, Rail, XGC, and XGH?
ArmaGel® HTF is the only grade in the ArmaGel® product family designed and rated for passive fire protection, carrying both UL 1709 (120-minute hydrocarbon pool fire) and ISO 22899-1 (90-minute jet fire) certifications with tested configurations for 8" pipe and W10×49 structural steel beam.It is also the only grade identified on the TDS as a silica-aerogel blanket (versus generic "aerogel blanket" for other grades), and the only grade available in a single fixed standard thickness (10 mm / 0.4"). Multiple layers are applied to achieve the required fire rating for a given HP/A value and pipe configuration.
Why does thermal conductivity matter when selecting a passive fire protection insulation?
In passive fire protection applications, thermal conductivity determines how effectively the insulation delays heat transfer to the protected substrate during a fire event. ArmaGel® HTF's low declared thermal conductivity — 0.021 W/(m·K) at 75°F rising to 0.043 at 700°F — allows thinner layer counts to achieve the required fire ratings compared to conventional PFP materials, enabling easier installation on complex geometries such as elbows, fittings, and flanges where thick, rigid PFP systems are impractical.
What is the maximum operating temperature for ArmaGel® HTF?
The maximum operating temperature for ArmaGel® HTF is 650°C (1200°F) per ASTM C411 and ASTM C447. The TDS footnote states that for operating temperatures above 400°C (752°F), a metallic foil barrier of 0.05 mm (0.002 in) thickness must be additionally installed.
Is ArmaGel® HTF suitable for regulated and offshore environments?
Yes. ArmaGel® HTF complies with ASTM C1728 Type III Grade 1A, UL 1709, and ISO 22899-1. All UL fire tests were conducted at a UL laboratory under full UL witnessing. The jet fire test was conducted at an Efectis/France laboratory under full Efectis and UL witnessing. It also passes ASTM E84, ASTM C692/C795 (use over austenitic stainless steel), and ASTM C1617 Procedure A for corrosiveness to steel.
How should ArmaGel® HTF be specified?
Specify grade (ArmaGel® HTF), number of layers × 10 mm thickness required for the target fire rating and HP/A value per the tested configuration table, compliance requirements (UL 1709, ISO 22899-1, ASTM C1728 Type III Grade 1A, and others as applicable), dimensional tolerances, and finished format. Consult Armacell application manual(s) for industrial applications.
