ArmaGel® XGH is described on the TDS as a breakthrough flexible aerogel blanket for elevated temperature applications, compliant with ASTM C1728 Type III, Grade 1A and — uniquely within the ArmaGel® family — IOGP S-738 (JIP33), the international oil and gas industry specification for thermal insulation materials used in offshore and onshore oil and gas facilities.
It is available in three standard thicknesses (5 mm / 0.2″, 10 mm / 0.4″, 20 mm / 0.8″) in sheets in roll form 1.5 m (59″) wide. The TDS notes that ArmaGel® XGH is designed for applications where operating temperatures are above ambient, and that for design/installation above 80 mm thickness, Armacell technical services should be contacted.
The declared thermal conductivity is published at 13 temperature points from 0°C (32°F) to 650°C (1202°F) in both W/(m·K) and Btu-in/(h-ft²-°F), measured under a load of 1.5 kPa (0.22 psi) per ASTM C177. Values marked with asterisk (*) are recommended for use as inputs in calculation programs (e.g., 3EPlus).
A polynomial formula is provided on the TDS for both SI and IP units: SI: λd(θm) = 0.01947 + 1.567×10⁻⁵×θm + 5.913×10⁻⁸×(θm)² + 1.651×10⁻¹⁰×(θm)³; IP: k(θm) = 0.1333 + 5.135×10⁻⁵×θm + 1.115×10⁻⁷×(θm)² + 1.942×10⁻¹⁰×(θm)³. For operating temperatures above 400°C (752°F), a metallic foil barrier of 0.05 mm (0.002 in) thickness must be additionally installed.
The material features proprietary dust control technology, is reusable to reduce maintenance costs, and provides acoustic performance meeting ISO 15665.
Compliant with ASTM C1728 Type III, Grade 1A; IOGP S-738 (JIP33); ASTM C165; ASTM C303; ASTM C356; ASTM C411; ASTM C447; ASTM C692; ASTM C795; ASTM C1101; ASTM C1104; ASTM C1338; ASTM C1617; ASTM C1763; ASTM E84; EN 13501-1.
What differentiates ArmaGel® XGH from ArmaGel® HT, HTF, HTL, DT, Rail, and XGC?
ArmaGel® XGH is the only grade in the ArmaGel® family compliant with IOGP S-738 (JIP33) — the international oil and gas industry joint industry project specification for thermal insulation materials. It achieves A2-s1,d0 Non-combustible classification per EN 13501-1 — the same high fire classification as ArmaGel® HTL — while also meeting ASTM C1728 Type III Grade 1A and ISO 15665 acoustic performance. It provides a 13-point thermal conductivity curve with a published polynomial formula, features proprietary dust control technology, and is explicitly described on the TDS as reusable. It is designed for above-ambient temperature service only (not cryogenic).
Why does thermal conductivity matter when selecting aerogel insulation?
Thermal conductivity determines the insulation thickness required to achieve the target heat loss at the system operating temperature. At 0.0199 W/(m·K) at 75°F — lower than ArmaGel® HT at the same temperature — ArmaGel® XGH provides effective high-temperature insulation in a thinner profile, enabling the TDS claim of up to 80% thinner than traditional insulation products for equivalent thermal resistance, and supporting installation on complex geometries including elbows, fittings, and flanges.
What is the service temperature range for ArmaGel® XGH?
The service temperature maximum for ArmaGel® XGH is 650°C (1,200°F) per ASTM C411 and ASTM C447. The TDS notes that ArmaGel® XGH is designed for applications where operating temperatures are above ambient. For operating temperatures above 400°C (752°F), a metallic foil barrier of 0.05 mm (0.002 in) thickness must be additionally installed.
Is ArmaGel® XGH suitable for regulated offshore and oil and gas environments?
Yes. ArmaGel® XGH complies with IOGP S-738 (JIP33), ASTM C1728 Type III Grade 1A, EN 13501-1 (A2-s1,d0 Non-combustible), ASTM E84, ASTM C692/C795 for use over austenitic stainless steel, and ASTM C1617 Procedure A for corrosiveness to steel.
How should ArmaGel® XGH be specified?
Specify grade (ArmaGel® XGH), thickness (5 mm / 0.2", 10 mm / 0.4", or 20 mm / 0.8"), compliance requirements (ASTM C1728 Type III Grade 1A, IOGP S-738 JIP33, EN 13501-1 A2-s1,d0, and others as applicable), dimensional tolerances, and finished format. Consult Armacell application manual(s) for industrial applications. Contact Armacell technical services for designs above 80 mm total thickness.
