BERGQUIST SIL PAD TSP 1800 is an exceptional-performance, thermally conductive, electrically insulating elastomeric material. The silicone-based, fiberglass-reinforced construction has a smooth, highly compliant surface that is non-tacky on both sides for efficient re-positioning and ease of use, with an optional adhesive coating where fixturing is needed.

The material exhibits exceptional thermal performance at both low and high application pressures, and is designed for placement between an electronic power device and its heat sink in screw- and clip-mounted applications where electrical isolation is critical. Its excellent cut-through resistance protects the dielectric barrier under the fasteners and burrs typical of those mounts.

Mechanical performance includes 80 Shore 00 hardness, 20% elongation at 45° to warp and fill, and 9 MPa tensile strength. Electrically, dielectric breakdown voltage is 6,000 VAC, dielectric constant at 1,000 Hz is 8.0, and volume resistivity is 1 × 10⁹ ohm-meter.

Thermally, the Sil-Pad compound delivers 1.8 W/(m·K) thermal conductivity, with TO-220 thermal performance ranging from 2.82 °C/W at 10 psi to 1.9 °C/W at 200 psi, and thermal impedance from 0.71 °C·in²/W at 10 psi to 0.41 °C·in²/W at 200 psi (0.53 °C·in²/W at 50 psi). Operating temperature range is -60°C to +180°C. Supplied in sheet form, slit-to-width rolls or die-cut parts at 9, 12 and 16 mil (0.229 to 0.406 mm) thicknesses, and the material is UL 94 V-0 flame retardant.

Compliant with UL 94 V-0 (flame retardancy) and the listed ASTM test methods: ASTM D2240, D412, D149, D150, D257, and D5470.

What differentiates SIL PAD TSP 1800 from other SIL PAD TSP grades?

TSP 1800 (formerly Sil-Pad 1200) is the exceptional-performance non-tacky grade in the family. It delivers 1.8 W/(m·K) and 0.53 °C·in²/W at 50 psi, well ahead of the general-purpose TSP 900 (0.9 W/m·K) and TSP 1600S (1.6 W/m·K), while keeping a smooth, non-tacky surface on both sides for re-positioning. TSP 1800ST is the same conductivity class with natural tack on both sides for auto-placement, and TSP 3500 (3.5 W/m·K) sits above it where the thermal budget is tighter. TSP 1800 pairs its thermal performance with 6,000 VAC dielectric breakdown and excellent cut-through resistance, which is why it is specified under screw- and clip-mounted power devices.

Why does thermal impedance at pressure matter in material selection?

A Sil-Pad insulator sits between a power device and its heat sink under a mounting force, and the thermal resistance across it depends on how well the pad wets both surfaces at that force. Thermal impedance per ASTM D5470 captures the bulk conduction plus both interfaces at a stated pressure. TSP 1800 drops from 0.71 °C·in²/W at 10 psi to 0.41 °C·in²/W at 200 psi, so it performs well in low-force clip mounts and improves further under screw mounting.

What is the operating temperature range for SIL PAD TSP 1800?

The operating temperature range is -60°C to +180°C.

Is SIL PAD TSP 1800 suitable for flame-rated electronics environments?

Yes. The material carries a UL 94 V-0 flammability rating, making it suitable for power supplies, automotive electronics, motor controls, audio amplifiers and other UL-rated assemblies that require flame-retardant thermal interface insulation.

How should SIL PAD TSP 1800 be specified?

Specify grade (BERGQUIST SIL PAD TSP 1800), thickness (9, 12 or 16 mil; 0.229, 0.305 or 0.406 mm), part geometry (sheet, slit roll, die-cut or kiss-cut), whether the optional adhesive coating is required, mounting pressure and target thermal impedance, dielectric requirement, UL 94 V-0 flame rating, operating temperature range, and finished format.
