Common industries: Medical devices, life sciences, bioprocessing, laboratory equipment, healthcare.
BISCO® MS80® is a platinum-cured, open-cell silicone foam in the MS Bun Series, designed specifically to meet the performance and biocompatibility demands of life science applications.
Cast into block form and available in custom thicknesses, it is intended for cushioning in medical device seating, gasket and sealing in bioprocessing equipment, gap filling and insulation in sensitive laboratory instruments, shock and vibration management in medical and life science devices, and wound dressing and tissue contact applications where long-term in-body exposure is required.
The platinum cure system distinguishes this series from peroxide-cured industrial silicone foams, supporting the biocompatibility and purity requirements of regulated healthcare environments.
The material provides high acoustic and sound absorption and vibration isolation due to its low natural frequency open-cell structure. Tear strength exceeds 2.0 ppi per ASTM D624. Low temperature flex passes per ASTM D1056. Thermal conductivity (uncompressed) is 0.036 W/mK per ASTM C518. Sanitizer resistance, ozone resistance, UV resistance, and extreme temperature resistance are all confirmed Yes on the TDS. Dielectric breakdown (Method C, slow rate of rise, 500 v/s) is 43 per ASTM D149, and volume resistivity is 7.0 × 10¹³ per ASTM D257.
Compliant with FDA 21 CFR 177.2600.
What differentiates MS80® from MS96® in the BISCO® MS Bun Series?
MS80® is the lower-density grade in the MS Bun Series at 5 lb/ft³ with a compression force deflection range of 0.2–1.2 psi, making it the softer and more compliant option compared to MS96® (6 lb/ft³, 0.4–1.5 psi CFD). MS80® also has a dielectric breakdown value of 43 versus 45 for MS96®, and its low temperature flex is reported as Pass without a specific temperature value, whereas MS96® records a specific low temperature flex value of -67°F. Both grades are platinum-cured, open-cell, and compliant with 21 CFR 177.2600.
Why is compression set critical for a medical-grade silicone foam used in cushioning and sealing?
In medical device cushioning, a foam with high compression set will permanently deform under sustained patient load, reducing comfort and losing its protective geometry over the product's service life. In gasket and sealing applications within bioprocessing equipment, permanent set means the foam no longer maintains adequate contact force against the mating surfaces, allowing contamination of critical environments. MS80®'s compression set of 1.5% at 22 hours, 212°F, 50% deflection demonstrates near-complete dimensional recovery after sustained compression at elevated temperature — essential for long service life in both cushioning and hermetic sealing applications.
What is the recommended constant use temperature for MS80®?
The recommended constant use temperature is 392°F as listed on the TDS.
Is MS80® suitable for regulated medical and life science environments?
Yes. MS80® is compliant with FDA 21 CFR 177.2600. It is a platinum-cured material specifically engineered for life science applications, with confirmed sanitizer resistance, UV resistance, ozone resistance, and extreme temperature resistance as listed on the TDS. The TDS also states that medical-grade silicone is safe for long-term exposure inside the body for wound dressing and tissue contact applications.
How should MS80® be specified?
Specify grade (MS80SIL), density (5 lb/ft³), CFD range (0.2–1.2 psi), color (White), applicable compliance requirements (FDA 21 CFR 177.2600), custom thickness, dimensional tolerances, and finished format (bun block, sheet, or die-cut component).
