Cling Foam (GP)

Cling Foam is a 1/16″ industrial PVC foam cast to a high-gloss paper backing, producing a foam surface that adheres to non-porous substrates yet remains removable and repositionable without residue. Adhesion to both stainless steel and cork is rated 12 oz/in minimum, and the foam remains pliable from −20°C to 78°C (−4°F to 172°F). The foam is available with adhesive backing for permanent lamination to cork or other secondary substrates, supporting use as a transportation cushion or non-porous-material storage interface.

    • Spacer or temporary cushion for transportation of glass, mirror, and other non-porous fragile materials
    • Storage interlayer for non-porous goods including glass sheets, panels, and finished surfaces
    • Protective interleaving in stacking and palletizing operations where surface-mark-free release is required
    • Laminated cushion converting on cork, foam, or composite secondary substrates
    • Non-residue temporary surface protection for finished glass and polished non-porous components

Common industries: Glass and mirror handling, transportation and packaging, surface protection converting, stoneware and tile distribution, industrial logistics.

Cling Foam is a flexible industrial PVC foam cast to a high-gloss paper substrate, producing a self-clinging surface that adheres directly to non-porous materials such as glass without requiring a separate adhesive layer.

The cling action is removable and repositionable, leaving no residue on the protected surface — a key distinction from conventional pressure-sensitive adhesive constructions, which rely on tackified polymer chemistry rather than the surface-energy / surface-finish interaction that produces the cling effect.

The foam can also be supplied with a permanent adhesive backing, allowing lamination to cork or other secondary substrates for converted cushion or spacer assemblies.

Adhesion to both cork and stainless steel is rated at 12 oz/in minimum, with the cork value relevant to laminated constructions and the stainless steel value characteristic of the cling-to-non-porous surface performance. The PVC foam has a Shore 00 durometer of 45 and 5 psi compression deflection per ASTM D1667 — soft enough to act as a protective cushion against glass and similar fragile non-porous materials.

Tensile strength is 20 psi (ASTM D412 Die A), and water absorption is 3% (ASTM D1056). The foam remains pliable from −20°C to 78°C (−4°F to 172°F). Shelf life is 6 months with adhesive or 2 years without adhesive when stored at or below 75°F.

What differentiates Cling Foam from pressure-sensitive adhesive foam tapes?

Cling Foam adheres to non-porous substrates through surface-energy interaction with the smooth high-gloss paper face, not through tackified polymer chemistry — meaning there is no adhesive transfer or residue when removed. Conventional PSA foam tapes rely on adhesive bonding that, even when "removable," typically leaves some interaction with the substrate surface. Cling Foam's mechanism is fundamentally different and is the right selection when zero residue on glass or finished non-porous surfaces is non-negotiable.

Why is adhesion important when selecting this material?

For Cling Foam, adhesion measures both the cling-to-substrate strength (12 oz/in minimum on stainless steel) and the secondary lamination strength (12 oz/in minimum on cork) when the optional permanent adhesive backing is applied. These values establish that the foam holds adequately during transportation and storage while remaining easily removable from non-porous surfaces.

What is the temperature range for Cling Foam?

Cling Foam remains pliable from −20°C to 78°C (−4°F to 172°F).

Is Cling Foam suitable for direct contact with finished glass and polished surfaces?

Yes. The TDS explicitly identifies storage of non-porous materials such as glass as a primary application and emphasizes very easy removal from glass with non-residue bonding. No specific regulatory compliance standards are listed on the TDS for this material.

How should Cling Foam be specified?

Specify product (Cling Foam GP), thickness (1/16"), color (Ivory White), adhesive option (with or without permanent adhesive backing), compliance requirements, dimensional tolerances, and finished format.
