Common industries: LNG, oil and gas, cryogenic processing, offshore, petrochemical, industrial manufacturing.

Cryogel® Z is a flexible aerogel blanket insulation designed for sub-ambient, cold cycling, and cryogenic applications where maximum thermal protection is required in the thinnest and lightest possible profile.

At 10 lb/ft³, it is the lowest density aerogel insulation in this product group, and the integrated vapor retarder achieves ≤0.00 perms water vapor transmission per ASTM E96 – Dry cup — providing redundant moisture protection for cold service systems where vapor ingress is a primary failure mode.

The TDS identifies the material as proven in global LNG liquefaction and regasification facilities and notes that its robust performance during construction, transport, and operations makes it suitable for pre-insulation and modular builds. The TDS also states the material eliminates the need for contraction joints, reducing cost and complexity in cryogenic systems.

The material passes ASTM C795 for use over austenitic stainless steel, ASTM C1617 corrosiveness to steel, ASTM C1763 water absorption by immersion, ASTM C1338 fungal resistance (No Growth), ASTM C1104/1104M water vapor sorption (≤5%), ASTM C1101/1101M flexibility, and ASTM C356 linear shrinkage under soaking heat (<2%). Flame Spread Index is ≤25 and Smoke Developed Index is ≤50 per ASTM E84. No thermal conductivity values and no ASTM C1728 type designation are listed on the manufacturer’s TDS for this material.

    Compliant with ASTM C165; ASTM C356; ASTM C795; ASTM C1101/1101M; ASTM C1104/1104M; ASTM C1338; ASTM C1617; ASTM C1763; ASTM E84; ASTM E96 – Dry cup.

What differentiates Cryogel® Z from ArmaGel® DT and XGC in cryogenic service?

Cryogel® Z is White (versus Grey/Gray for DT and XGC), has the lowest density in this aerogel product group at 10 lb/ft³, and is available in only two thicknesses (0.2" and 0.4"). Like DT and XGC, it incorporates an integrated vapor retarder achieving ≤0.00 perms water vapor transmission per ASTM E96. The TDS for Cryogel® Z does not list thermal conductivity values or an ASTM C1728 type designation — properties present on both ArmaGel® DT and XGC TDS documents. Cryogel® Z is specifically identified on its TDS as proven in global LNG facilities and as suitable for multi-hazard protection (thermal, acoustic, jet-fire, pool fire, and cryogenic spill) in a single system.

Why does the integrated vapor retarder matter for this application?

In sub-ambient and cryogenic insulation systems, water vapor in the surrounding air will migrate toward the cold pipe surface if not blocked. Without an effective vapor barrier, moisture accumulates within the insulation, dramatically increasing thermal conductivity, promoting corrosion under insulation, and potentially causing ice formation that damages the insulation system. Cryogel® Z's integrated vapor retarder achieves ≤0.00 perms per ASTM E96 – Dry cup, providing redundant moisture protection in a single blanket and eliminating the need for separately installed vapor barrier layers and contraction joints.

What is the maximum use temperature for Cryogel® Z?

The maximum use temperature for Cryogel® Z is 257°F as listed on the TDS. No test method is listed for this value and no minimum use temperature is stated on the TDS.

Is Cryogel® Z suitable for regulated environments?

Cryogel® Z passes ASTM E84 (Flame Spread Index ≤25; Smoke Developed Index ≤50), ASTM C795 (use over austenitic stainless steel), ASTM C1617 (corrosiveness to steel), ASTM C1338 (fungal resistance — No Growth), and ASTM E96 – Dry cup (water vapor transmission ≤0.00 perms). No ASTM C1728 type designation or additional compliance certifications are listed on the manufacturer's TDS for this material.

How should Cryogel® Z be specified?

Specify grade (Cryogel® Z), thickness (0.2" or 0.4"), color (White), compliance requirements, dimensional tolerances, and finished format.
