EnsoLite® EF0 is a super soft, semi-closed cell EPDM foam produced in continuous roll form and designed for space filling and sealing applications in automotive, outdoor, and noise reduction environments. As a crushed foam construction, EF0 delivers excellent conformability at very low compression forces, making it well suited for applications where minimal load on mating surfaces is required.

It meets ASTM D 1056 1A0 requirements, with a noted exception for elevated temperature compression set at 70°C (158°F), and is approved by General Motors, Stellantis (FCA/Chrysler), and MAHLE.

The EPDM polymer base provides excellent resistance to ozone, weather, and UV exposure, supporting both interior and exterior automotive applications across a broad service temperature range. EF0 passes FMVSS 302 burn rate testing at thicknesses of 0.125 in (3.18 mm) and higher. Compression deflection values at 25%, 50%, and 50% with 60-second hold are all characterized, reflecting the material’s suitability for dynamic sealing and space-filling conditions.

The change in compression deflection after aging is controlled to <2 psi (<13.8 kPa) per ASTM D1056, with the note that if the aged value still falls within this limit, the grade is considered acceptable even if the change from the original exceeds ±20%.

Compliant with FMVSS 302; meets GMW 17408 Class I Type I (General Motors), MSAY 550 MS.90145 Type 2 (Stellantis / FCA / Chrysler), and GN AR 06220 / GN AR 06346 Par 6.13 (MAHLE).

What differentiates EnsoLite® EF0 from firmer grades of EPDM sponge foam?

EnsoLite® EF0 is a super soft, crushed EPDM foam with a maximum compression deflection at 25% of 0.80 psi — making it one of the softest grades in the series. This low load-bearing characteristic is specifically engineered for space filling and sealing where minimal force on mating surfaces is required, such as in automotive cavity filling and vibration isolation gaps.

Why is compression set critical for an EPDM foam used in automotive sealing applications?

Compression set measures the permanent deformation a foam retains after sustained compression. For automotive seals and space-filling components installed under long-term load, a high compression set means the foam will not fully recover when load is removed, leading to gaps in the seal and potential infiltration of air, dust, moisture, and noise. EnsoLite® EF0 is rated at 5% max under standard conditions, though it carries a noted exception of 80% max at elevated temperature (70°C / 158°F).

What is the operating temperature range for EnsoLite® EF0?

The operating temperature range is Min: -75°C (-103°F) / Max (Intermittent): 121°C (250°F) as stated on the TDS.

Is EnsoLite® EF0 suitable for automotive OEM environments?

Yes. EnsoLite® EF0 meets General Motors GMW 17408 Class I Type I (Interior & Exterior Applications), Stellantis (FCA/Chrysler) MSAY 550 MS.90145 Type 2, and MAHLE GN AR 06220 (GN AR 06346) Par 6.13, and passes FMVSS 302 burn rate testing at 0.125 in (3.18 mm) and higher.

How should EnsoLite® EF0 be specified?

Specify grade (EnsoLite® EF0), thickness, color (Black), compliance requirements (OEM specification and/or FMVSS 302), dimensional tolerances, and finished format.
