GORE® Automotive Vents for Exterior Lighting — AVS 22 / AVS 23

GORE® Automotive Vents AVS 22 and AVS 23 are low-profile adhesive-mounted laminate vent components designed to provide pressure equalization and ingress protection for automotive rear lamps. Both variants use a laminate membrane construction (LM2XX: ePTFE/nylon woven) with AD103 silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive and deliver hydrophobic and oleophobic protection. AVS 22 (OD 12.70 mm / ID 7.11 mm) and AVS 23 (OD 19.05 mm / ID 8.89 mm) are available for manual or automated installation and are compatible with all lamp types — LED, Xenon, and Halogen — and with both clear and colored lenses.

Both variants share an operating temperature range of -40 °C to +150 °C and a Water Entry Pressure (assembly) of > 345 mbar (> 5.0 psi) for 60 seconds. AVS 22 delivers minimum airflow > 4.1 l/h and typical airflow of 9.3 l/h at 70 mbar (1 psi); AVS 23 delivers minimum airflow > 6.5 l/h and typical airflow of 14.4 l/h at 70 mbar (1 psi). Diffusion performance (ASTM E96 Water method) is > 50 mg moisture/day for AVS 22 and > 100 mg moisture/day for AVS 23.

A protective target frame is required for water spray resistance, and the vent must be installed in a protected area. Housings made of high-water-absorption plastics (above 0.15% per ASTM D570, 24 hrs at 23 °C) must be evaluated. Adhesive parts should be stored in cool dry conditions (22 °C / 50% RH) and out of direct sunlight; vents are most easily removed from the product carrier within one year of the packaging date. Manufactured at a facility certified to IATF 16949, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001.

GORE® Automotive Vents AVS 22 and AVS 23 are adhesive-mounted rear lamp venting components designed to equalize pressure between the lamp housing interior and the external environment while blocking water, dust, dirt, and debris. The laminate membrane construction (ePTFE/nylon woven, type LM2XX) with AD103 silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive provides a secure, durable bond to the lamp housing and delivers hydrophobic and oleophobic surface protection.

The two variants differ in size — AVS 22 has a 12.70 mm outer diameter and 7.11 mm inner diameter; AVS 23 has a 19.05 mm outer diameter and 8.89 mm inner diameter — allowing design flexibility for different lamp housing geometries while sharing identical performance ratings for water entry pressure and operating temperature.

Both variants support automated, semi-automated, and manual installation processes and are compatible with all lamp types including LED, Xenon, and Halogen, and with both clear and colored lenses. Each is available under separate order numbers for manual versus automated installation configurations. A protective target frame is required for water spray resistance; the vent must be installed in a protected area of the housing. Housings made of high-water-absorption plastics (above 0.15% per ASTM D570, 24 hrs at 23 °C) must be evaluated for compatibility.

Manufactured at a facility certified to IATF 16949, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001. No compliance standards are specified on the manufacturer’s TDS for this material beyond the manufacturing certifications noted.

What differentiates AVS 22 from AVS 23?

AVS 22 and AVS 23 are functionally identical — same membrane type, same water entry pressure, same operating temperature range, same adhesive, and same installation process options. The difference is physical size: AVS 22 has a 12.70 mm outer diameter and 7.11 mm inner diameter; AVS 23 has a 19.05 mm outer diameter and 8.89 mm inner diameter. The larger AVS 23 delivers higher minimum and typical airflow and greater moisture diffusion per day, making it better suited for larger lamp housings or applications requiring faster pressure equalization and condensation reduction.

Why does diffusion performance matter for rear lamp venting?

Diffusion performance — measured as moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) per ASTM E96 — determines how quickly moisture vapor can exit the lamp housing after a heat or humidity cycle. Higher diffusion rates reduce lens fogging and clearing times. AVS 22 delivers > 50 mg moisture/day and AVS 23 delivers > 100 mg moisture/day, with the larger AVS 23 offering faster condensation clearing for larger lamp volumes.

What is the operating temperature range for GORE® Automotive Vents AVS 22 and AVS 23?

    -40 °C to +150 °C.

Are GORE® Automotive Vents AVS 22 and AVS 23 suitable for automotive-regulated environments?

Yes. Both variants are manufactured at a facility certified to IATF 16949, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001. They are compatible with LED, Xenon, and Halogen lamp types and with both clear and colored lenses. Note that a protective target frame is required for water spray resistance, and housings made of high-water-absorption plastics (above 0.15% per ASTM D570) must be evaluated.

How should GORE® Automotive Vents AVS 22 and AVS 23 be specified?

Specify variant (AVS 22 or AVS 23), installation method (manual or automated), lamp type, housing material (and confirm water absorption is ≤ 0.15% per ASTM D570), and whether a protective target frame will be incorporated into the housing design for water spray resistance.
