Common industries: electric motor manufacturing, power generation, rail and automotive traction, transformer manufacturing, industrial electrical equipment.
Kapton® 100CRC is a corona resistant variant of the Kapton® polyimide film family, developed for use as an electrically insulating material in high voltage environments where the potential for corona discharge is present.
Corona discharge occurs in motor insulation systems, particularly in inverter-duty motors and other variable frequency drive applications, and causes progressive degradation that significantly shortens the service life of conventional polyimide insulation. Kapton® 100CRC is engineered to resist this degradation, providing substantially longer voltage endurance compared to standard Kapton® HN at 1250 VAC/1050Hz under ASTM D2275 test conditions.
The film can be laminated with other materials such as Nomex® paper or mica to produce tailored electrical insulation systems with a specific combination of properties.
In addition to its corona resistant performance, Kapton® 100CRC retains the full suite of physical, electrical, thermal, and chemical resistance properties expected of the Kapton® film family. Its tensile modulus of 520 kpsi (3.6 GPa) is higher than standard Kapton® HN, and its density of 1.55 g/cc reflects the modified composition. Volume resistivity exceeds 10¹⁶ ohm-cm, dielectric constant at 1 kHz is 3.4, and dissipation factor is 0.002 — all consistent with high-performance polyimide insulation requirements.
Compliant with UL-94 V-0. UL Electrical RTI 240°C and UL Mechanical RTI 200°C per UL 746B.
What differentiates Kapton® 100CRC from standard Kapton® HN?
Kapton® 100CRC is specifically engineered to resist corona discharge degradation, which standard HN is not rated for. Under ASTM D2275 testing at 1250 VAC/1050Hz (1/2 in diameter electrodes, 5th out of 9 specimens), 100CRC demonstrates substantially longer time to failure than 100HN, directly translating to longer motor and generator insulation service life in inverter-duty and high voltage applications.
Why does dielectric strength matter for corona resistant film selection?
Dielectric strength determines the maximum voltage a film can withstand before breakdown, and is a baseline requirement for any electrical insulation. At 6500 V/mil (256 kV/mm), Kapton® 100CRC meets the demanding electrical insulation requirements of high voltage motor and generator applications, while its corona resistant formulation addresses the long-term degradation from partial discharge that dielectric strength alone does not capture.
What is the service temperature rating for Kapton® 100CRC?
Kapton® 100CRC carries a UL Electrical RTI of 240°C and a UL Mechanical RTI of 200°C, both per UL 746B.
Is Kapton® 100CRC suitable for regulated environments?
Yes. Kapton® 100CRC is rated UL-94 V-0 and carries UL Electrical RTI 240°C and UL Mechanical RTI 200°C per UL 746B.
How should Kapton® 100CRC be specified?
Specify grade (Kapton® 100CRC), thickness (1 mil / 25.4 µm), compliance requirements (UL-94 V-0, UL 746B RTI ratings), lamination partners if applicable (Nomex®, mica), dimensional tolerances, and finished format (slit roll, sheet, or die-cut component).
