Kapton® 150FCR019 is a composite magnet wire insulation film built from two functional layers: a Kapton® 100CR corona resistant polyimide core that resists the degradation caused by partial discharge, and a heat fusible fluoropolymer film that allows the tape to be bonded to itself and to the conductor using standard tape wrapping and fusing equipment.
This construction allows the film to be processed on most tape wrapping machines using induction or radiant heat, consistent with standard Kapton® FN film processing — while delivering the corona resistance of the 100CR polyimide in environments where conventional insulation materials would experience accelerated degradation.
The film has a documented long-term performance history as a magnet wire insulation in rail traction motors, industrial motors, and generators where enhanced insulation life under partial discharge environments is required, including ESP and artificial lift motors and aerospace specialty wire applications. It retains the physical, electrical, thermal, and chemical resistance characteristics expected of Kapton® polyimide films.
The H-O Products TDS for this material provides five core property values; additional property data is available from the manufacturer.
What differentiates Kapton® 150FCR019 from standard Kapton® FN?
Kapton® 150FCR019 replaces the standard HN polyimide core of Kapton® FN with Kapton® 100CR corona resistant polyimide, enabling use in partial discharge environments where standard FN would degrade. It retains heat fusibility through its fluoropolymer layer and is processable on the same tape wrapping equipment as FN, but provides corona resistance that FN does not offer.
Why does dielectric strength matter for magnet wire insulation selection?
Dielectric strength determines how much voltage the insulation can withstand before electrical breakdown. At 4300 V/mil (169 kV/mm), Kapton® 150FCR019 meets the voltage withstand requirements of motor and generator insulation systems, while its corona resistant polyimide core addresses the long-term partial discharge degradation that dielectric strength alone does not prevent.
What processing conditions are required for Kapton® 150FCR019?
Kapton® 150FCR019 can be processed on most tape wrapping machines using induction or radiant heat, with processing conditions similar to standard Kapton® FN films.
Is Kapton® 150FCR019 suitable for regulated environments?
No compliance certifications are specified on the H-O Products TDS for Kapton® 150FCR019. Contact H-O Products for additional compliance information.
How should Kapton® 150FCR019 be specified?
Specify grade (Kapton® 150FCR019), thickness (1.50 mil / 38.1 µm), overlap requirements, dimensional tolerances, and finished format (slit roll for tape wrapping or fabricated component).
