Common industries: electric motor manufacturing, magnet wire fabrication, industrial motor rewinding, HVAC compressor manufacturing.
Kapton® 150FWN019 is a heat-fusible magnet wire insulation film engineered for demanding winding applications, including difficult-to-wind motors where other polyimide insulations cause excessive friction or processing problems.
The film’s dispersion-coated FEP layer bonds to itself and to Kapton® under heat and pressure (minimum heat seal strength >235 gms/cm in both orientations), enabling it to be processed on most tape wrapping machines using induction or radiant heat — consistent with standard Kapton® FN film processing conditions.
Motor manufacturers have reported lower frictional properties with 150FWN019 versus other commonly used polyimide insulations, which supports higher wire production yields in difficult winding geometries.
The FEP layer limits moisture absorption of the composite to less than 2.2% at 100% RH (polyimide only), with water vapor permeability below 10 gms/m²/day. The hygroscopic coefficient of expansion of the polyimide layer is below 12 ppm/%RH. The polyimide core has no melting point (ASTM E-794); the FEP layer melts above 257°C (ASTM E-794). Tensile modulus is 170 kpsi (1.18 GPa) — substantially lower than standard Kapton® HN — reflecting the composite construction and FEP content. Volume resistivity exceeds 10¹⁶ ohm-cm.
Compliant with UL 94 V-0.
What differentiates Kapton® 150FWN019 from standard Kapton® FN films?
Kapton® 150FWN019 uses an enhanced FEP fluoropolymer dispersion coating specifically formulated to deliver superior scrape abrasion resistance and lower frictional properties than standard Kapton® FN films. Motor manufacturers have reported that wire insulated with 150FWN019 exhibits lower friction than wire insulated with other commonly used polyimide materials, making it particularly effective for difficult-to-wind motor geometries where friction causes winding quality or yield problems.
Why does dielectric strength matter for magnet wire insulation selection?
Dielectric strength is the primary electrical isolation parameter for magnet wire insulation — it determines the maximum voltage the insulation can withstand before breakdown between adjacent turns or between conductors and the stator core. Kapton® 150FWN019's dielectric strength greater than 3600 V/mil (>142 kV/mm) meets the insulation requirements of the motor and generator applications for which it is designed.
What is the service temperature capability of Kapton® 150FWN019?
The mechanical service temperature is 200°C; the glass transition temperature of the polyimide core is greater than 350°C. The FEP fluoropolymer layer begins to melt above 257°C, which is the fusing temperature exploited during tape wrapping processing.
Is Kapton® 150FWN019 suitable for flame-rated environments?
Yes. Kapton® 150FWN019 is rated UL 94 V-0. No additional compliance certifications are specified on the H-O Products TDS for this material.
How should Kapton® 150FWN019 be specified?
Specify grade (Kapton® 150FWN019), thickness (1.50 mil / 38 µm), overlap, fusing method (induction or radiant heat), compliance requirements (UL 94 V-0), dimensional tolerances, and roll format (slit roll width for tape wrapping operations).
