NeoNxGen® N-280 is a high-performance, single-layer flexible graphite heat spreader from NeoGraf Solutions, supplied at 280 ±25 µm thickness with a gloss finish in 265 mm × 405 mm sheets. It delivers 1000 W/m·K in-plane thermal conductivity and 4.0 W/m·K through-plane, for a thermal conductance of 280 mW/K, and it supersedes the former N-270 grade. NeoNxGen provides the in-plane performance of a multi-layer synthetic graphite stack in one continuous sheet, eliminating the lamination steps, 5 µm adhesive films, roll splices and yield losses that come with laminating several synthetic layers together.

The material is roughly 30 percent lighter than aluminum with four to five times its thermal conductivity, and its strong anisotropy (very low through-plane conductivity) creates exceptionally large thermal activation areas, so a small hot source is spread over a wide area of the sheet. It can be die-cut or laminated with plastics and adhesives for peel-and-stick installation.

    Physical and electrical performance includes 1.9 g/cm³ density, a coefficient of thermal expansion of –0.4 ppm/°C in-plane and 27.0 ppm/°C through-plane, a specific heat of 0.81 J/g·°C at 50°C, in-plane electrical resistivity of 2.4 × 10⁻⁴ Ω·cm (4,400 S/cm conductivity) and through-plane electrical conductivity of 0.005 S/m. With standard PET/adhesive coatings the operating range is –30°C to +140°C long-term and –40°C to +149°C short-term; uncoated graphite is rated –250°C to +400°C in an oxygen-containing atmosphere and to +3000°C in a reducing atmosphere or vacuum.

In-plane thermal conductivity is determined by the NeoGraf Standard Method; through-plane by ASTM D5470. Properties listed are typical and cannot be used as acceptance or rejection criteria; product characteristics exclude coatings and adhesives. H-O supplies full sheets and 8″ × 8″ sample sheets and converts N-280 into die-cut, kiss-cut and laminated parts to drawing.

Compliant with UL 94 V-0 (with or without standard PET/adhesive coatings), NASA outgassing requirements for spacecraft use (TML ≤ 1.0%, CVCM ≤ 0.10% per ASTM E595), RoHS and REACH; lead-free and halogen-free.

What is the difference between NeoNxGen N-280 and the former N-270?

N-280 is NeoGraf's replacement for N-270. It is supplied at 280 ±25 µm (versus 270 ±25 µm) with a gloss finish, in 265 mm × 405 mm sheets rather than rolls, and is rated at 1000 W/m·K in-plane and 4.0 W/m·K through-plane on the current NeoGraf data sheet. If you have an existing N-270 drawing, send it over and we will confirm the N-280 part and coating designation for you.

How does NeoNxGen N-280 compare with the SpreaderShield natural graphite grades and with multi-layer synthetic graphite?

SpreaderShield SS350 to SS600 natural graphite spreaders run from 350 to 600 W/m·K in-plane. NeoNxGen N-280 delivers 1000 W/m·K in a single 280 µm layer, which puts it in the range of a laminated stack of synthetic graphite sheets, without the adhesive films, lamination yield loss and inspection steps a multi-layer stack requires. Its thermal conductance of 280 mW/K is the simplest way to compare spreading ability: the higher the number, the more heat the sheet moves.

Is NeoNxGen N-280 suitable for space and satellite applications?

Yes. N-280 meets NASA outgassing requirements for spacecraft use (total mass loss of 1.0 percent maximum and collected volatile condensable material of 0.10 percent maximum, per ASTM E595), and uncoated graphite is rated to –250°C in vacuum. Its low mass for the heat it spreads is a particular advantage where every gram counts.

What is the operating temperature range for NeoNxGen N-280?

With standard PET/adhesive coatings, –30°C to +140°C long-term and –40°C to +149°C short-term. Uncoated graphite is rated –250°C to +400°C in an oxygen-containing atmosphere and –250°C to +3000°C in a reducing atmosphere or vacuum.

How should NeoNxGen N-280 be specified?

Specify grade (NeoNxGen N-280, 280 µm), part geometry (full sheet, die-cut or kiss-cut part to drawing), coating and adhesive configuration using the NeoGraf part designation (for example N-280 P1GP1A1 for PET top coating and PET/adhesive bottom coating, per NeoGraf TDS 322), the heat source and spreading area, operating temperature range, any outgassing or flame requirements, and finished format. Note that N-280 is supplied in sheets only; roll form is not currently offered.
