Nomex® 818 Calendered Aramid-Mica Insulation Paper

Nomex® 818 is a calendered blend of aramid and mica paper designed for high-voltage applications, including motor conductor and coil wrap, transformer ground and layer insulation. It offers high inherent dielectric strength (700–1,000 V/mil) and increased voltage endurance compared to Nomex® 410 when subjected to corona attack. Nomex® 818 is available in five thicknesses ranging from 0.08 mm to 0.25 mm (3 mil to 10 mil).

    Nomex® 818 is a calendered blend of aramid and mica engineered specifically for high-voltage applications such as motor conductor and coil wrap, and transformer ground and layer insulation. Because it is composed of 50% inorganic mica, its dielectric properties are markedly more stable with temperature than standard aramid paper, and its dielectric constant remains essentially unchanged from 23°C to 250°C.

    Nomex® 818 is designed to provide voltage endurance under sustained corona attack at least equivalent to the best inorganic insulations, and greatly superior to other organic materials, which has led to its long-standing commercial use insulating stator coils in AC motors up to 13.6 kV class. Its Limiting Oxygen Index is 63% at room temperature, declining to 52% at 220°C, and it must be heated above 700°C before its LOI falls below the flammability threshold.
