Poly-Seal CR
Poly-Seal CR is a single-sided pressure-sensitive modified butyl sealing tape constructed on a DuPont Sontara® polyester non-woven fabric backing, supplied at 25–29 mils total thickness with 25 mils of butyl adhesive. Designed for a 30-year service cycle, the Sontara® non-woven backing is paint-receptive — accepting epoxy or water-based paints and weatherized coatings — making the tape “coating ready” for custom finishing on metal roofs and exposed seams. Performance includes >10 pli peel adhesion, 790 psi minimum tensile strength, ASTM E84 Flame 15 / Smoke 15, SMACNA pressure-class rating, and Seal Class A. VOC is 0 g/L per EPA Method #2.

Poly-Seal CR (“Coating Ready”) is a single-sided pressure-sensitive modified butyl sealing tape engineered for a 30-year service cycle as a duct joint and general-purpose rolled sealant. The defining feature of this variant is the DuPont Sontara® polyester non-woven fabric backing, which accepts paint and coatings — allowing the sealed seam to be finished to match the surrounding substrate appearance.
This positions CR as the preferred Poly-Seal selection for metal roof seam sealing prior to coating application, and for any installation where the visible sealant must be painted to match the surrounding finish. The Gray Matter™ butyl adhesive is a 100% solids sealant that stays flexible and does not release from the substrate, while the Sontara® backing provides paintability that conventional film-backed butyl tapes cannot offer.
The product is widely used for sealing seams on metal roofs prior to coating, and is also available as buttons and other die-cut shapes for spot sealing applications.
Performance characteristics include immediate aggressive grip on sheet metal, duct board, and flex duct; full bond within 24 hours; 790 psi minimum tensile strength; 560% average elongation; and ASTM E84 flame and smoke ratings of 15 and 15 respectively (both lower — better — than the AF variant’s 20/40 ratings). Water resistance is excellent, low-temperature flexibility is excellent with no cracking, and the tape is mold- and mildew-resistant.
The tape carries SMACNA pressure-class qualification and Seal Class A rating per industry HVAC sealing standards. VOC limitation passes SCAQMD Rule 1168, and total VOC is 0 g/L per EPA Method #2. Service temperature is −20°F to 180°F.

What differentiates Poly-Seal CR from other Poly-Seal variants?
CR is the only Poly-Seal variant with a paint-receptive backing. The DuPont Sontara® non-woven polyester fabric accepts epoxy and water-based paints (and weatherized coatings for exterior use), allowing the sealed seam to be finished to match surrounding substrates. CR also has the lowest ASTM E84 flame and smoke ratings in the family at 15/15 (compared to AF's 20/40), and carries SMACNA pressure-class and Seal Class A credentials.
Why is peel adhesion important when selecting this tape?
For paintable seam sealing, peel adhesion must remain robust both before and after coating application. The >10 pli peel value confirms strong substrate anchoring, while the 100% solids butyl formulation that "stays flexible and does not release from the substrate" supports long-term seal integrity under thermal cycling and structural movement, even with coating applied over the top.
