The unsupported construction allows the butyl to flow into voids and uneven gaps when compressed between two mating surfaces, producing a positive seal that conventional film-backed tapes cannot achieve. Self-healing behavior around fasteners makes it particularly well-suited for HVAC ductwork and joint applications where penetrations through the tape must remain sealed.
