PMD360AF Polyimide Foam with Rubber Adhesive and Aluminum Foil is a three-component aerospace insulation composite combining the PMD base polyimide foam with a rubber PSA (SLM360) on a 60# densified kraft backing and an aluminum foil facing. The aluminum foil provides high temperature resistance and is self-extinguishing with no afterglow or foil rupture exceeding the area of direct flame contact.

The rubber PSA provides excellent quick stick and shear properties for permanent bonding to foams, plastics, metals, and composite materials across a broad temperature range, and meets requirements of GM3622, Chrysler MS-CC211, and Delphi SD2-324.

The composite provides additional structural integrity over the base foam-only and foam-with-adhesive-only grades: tensile strength is 20 lb/in per ASTM D822 and Mullen bursting strength is 40 psi minimum per ASTM D774 — values not present on the PMD or PMD360 TDS documents.

The polyimide foam properties are identical to the PMD base and PMD360 grades: 0.44 lb/ft³ density, maximum continuous use temperature of 400°F, smoke developed index <5, NRC 0.75, outgassing TMI <1.0% and CVCM <0.1% per ASTM E595, thermal conductivity 0.32 btu/(h·ft²·°F). The rubber adhesive temperature range is maximum 180°F and minimum -10°F continuous use. Cold weather flexibility is rated Good.

Basis weight of the aluminum foil is 20 lbs/msf. FMVSS-302 passes and is attributed to the aluminum foil as stated in the product features. The composite meets FAR 25.856 (a) and the full aerospace specification suite. No ASTM D1056 or compression property data appear on this TDS.

Compliant with FAR 25.856 (a) (FAA Radiant Panel, Pass), FMVSS-302 (Pass), ASTM C1482 (Yes), Boeing BMS 8-300 (Yes), Boeing (Douglas) DMS 2330 (Yes), Bombardier BAMS 544-006 (Yes), Hamilton Sundstrand HS 14190 (Yes), and Lockheed Martin LAC 23-4831 (Yes). Rubber adhesive meets GM3622, Chrysler MS-CC211, and Delphi SD2-324.

What differentiates PMD360AF from the PMD and PMD360 grades?

PMD360AF is the only grade in the polyimide foam series that includes an aluminum foil facing. The foil adds FMVSS-302 compliance (attributed to the aluminum foil per the TDS product features), tensile strength (20 lb/in per ASTM D822), Mullen bursting strength (40 psi minimum per ASTM D774), cold weather flexibility (Good), and aluminum foil basis weight (20 lbs/msf) — none of which appear on the PMD or PMD360 TDS documents. The aluminum foil is described as self-extinguishing with no afterglow or foil rupture exceeding the area of direct flame contact. All three grades share the same polyimide foam core properties and aerospace specification suite.

Why is peel adhesion important for a rubber PSA polyimide foam composite used in aerospace applications?

The rubber PSA must provide reliable adhesion to the substrate — aircraft fuselage skins, duct surfaces, and composite structures — under the installation conditions and throughout the service life of the aircraft. Peel adhesion of 96 oz/inch per PSTC-101 confirms the SLM360 adhesive provides adequate initial and sustained holding power for permanent bonding to the range of aerospace substrates described on the TDS. In applications where the composite must also survive thermal cycling, vibration, and moisture exposure, the quick-stick and shear properties of the rubber PSA are the primary bonding performance attributes.

What are the temperature limits for PMD360AF?

The polyimide foam maximum continuous use temperature is 400°F. The rubber adhesive has a separate temperature range: maximum continuous use temperature of 180°F and minimum continuous use temperature of -10°F, as listed on the TDS.

Is PMD360AF suitable for regulated aerospace and automotive environments?

Yes. PMD360AF passes FAR 25.856 (a) and FMVSS-302, and meets Boeing BMS 8-300, Boeing (Douglas) DMS 2330, Bombardier BAMS 544-006, Hamilton Sundstrand HS 14190, Lockheed Martin LAC 23-4831, and ASTM C1482, as listed on the TDS. The rubber adhesive meets GM3622, Chrysler MS-CC211, and Delphi SD2-324.

    How should PMD360AF be specified?

Specify grade (PMD360AF), thickness (1/2"), color (Light Yellow), adhesive type (Rubber SLM360, single sided, 60# densified kraft backing), facing (aluminum foil, 20 lbs/msf basis weight), applicable compliance requirements (FAR 25.856(a), FMVSS-302, Boeing BMS 8-300, Boeing Douglas DMS 2330, Bombardier BAMS 544-006, Hamilton Sundstrand HS 14190, Lockheed Martin LAC 23-4831, ASTM C1482), dimensional tolerances, and finished format (sheet or die-cut component). Note the separate adhesive temperature limits (-10°F to 180°F) when evaluating for application temperature exposure.
