Common industries: industrial manufacturing, automotive, electronics.

PORON® ShockSeal® 4790-79 is a cellular polyurethane foam designed for combined shock absorption and environmental sealing in general industrial applications.

Three density grades — 192 (12), 240 (15), and 320 (20) kg/m³ (lb/ft³) — provide a wide range of compression force deflection values, from 7 kPa (1 psi) at the low end of the 192 kg/m³ range to 110 kPa (16 psi) at the high end of the 320 kg/m³ range, enabling the grade selection to be matched to specific load and deflection requirements.

It is intended for shock-absorbing seals, gaskets, and general industrial cushioning where impact energy absorption and an effective environmental seal are both required.

Tensile strength minimums of 207 to 689 kPa (30 to 100 psi) depending on density grade, combined with a minimum tensile elongation of greater than 145%, support reliable performance in die-cut gasket and seal geometries. Tear strength minimums range from 0.9 kN/m (5 pli) to 1.8 kN/m (10 pli). Water absorption from a 2-hour immersion at room temperature is 5% weight gain per ASTM D570. The material passes FMVSS 302 for all three density grades at minimum thicknesses specified by grade.

Compliant with FMVSS 302 and UL Gasketing & Sealing JMST2 (File MH15464).

What differentiates PORON® ShockSeal® 4790-79 from other PORON® foam grades?

PORON® ShockSeal® 4790-79 is specifically engineered to provide both shock absorption and environmental sealing in a single material, with a wide compression force deflection range — from 7 to 110 kPa (1 to 16 psi) across its three density grades — and high tensile strength minimums up to 689 kPa (100 psi), supporting demanding industrial sealing and gasketing applications.

Why is compression set critical for a shock absorbing seal?

Compression set measures how much permanent deformation occurs after sustained loading at temperature. PORON® ShockSeal® 4790-79 limits compression set to 5% maximum at 23°C (73°F) and 10% maximum at 70°C (158°F), ensuring the material continues to return to its original thickness after impact or sustained compression and maintains an effective environmental seal over the service life of the assembly.

What thickness ranges are available for PORON® ShockSeal® 4790-79?

Available thicknesses vary by density grade: 2.03–9.53 mm (0.080–0.375 in) for the 192 kg/m³ grade, 1.57–4.78 mm (0.062–0.188 in) for the 240 kg/m³ grade, and 3.18–12.70 mm (0.125–0.500 in) for the 320 kg/m³ grade.

    Is PORON® ShockSeal® 4790-79 suitable for automotive flame-rated environments?

Yes. PORON® ShockSeal® 4790-79 is compliant with FMVSS 302, with minimum passing thicknesses of 6.35 mm (0.250 in) for the 192 kg/m³ grade, 3.18 mm (0.125 in) for the 240 kg/m³ grade, and 1.57 mm (0.062 in) for the 320 kg/m³ grade. It also carries UL Gasketing & Sealing approval under JMST2 (File MH15464).

    How should PORON® ShockSeal® 4790-79 be specified?

Specify grade (PORON® ShockSeal® 4790-79), density (192, 240, or 320 kg/m³), thickness, compliance requirements, dimensional tolerances, and finished format.
