Pyrogel® XTE is a flexible, high-performance aerogel blanket insulation designed for industrial and commercial applications where superior thermal performance, CUI defense, and space efficiency are required. Aerogel is a lightweight solid derived from gel in which the liquid component has been replaced with air — a process that produces the lowest thermal conductivity of any known solid.
The patented manufacturing process integrates this aerogel into a fiber-batting structure to create a flexible, resilient, and durable blanket. Available in 0.2″ and 0.4″ thicknesses, the product’s thin profile — described on the TDS as 75% thinner than competing materials — makes it particularly suited for congested industrial installations, mechanical clash resolution, and pre-insulation workflows.
The material can be removed and reused after inspection, supporting lower total cost of ownership.
Pyrogel XTE is hydrophobic and breathable, resisting liquid water while allowing water vapor to escape, which directly prevents the corrosion mechanism at the heart of CUI failure in pipes, vessels, and equipment.
It passes ASTM C1728 (Type III, Grade 1A), ASTM C795 (insulation for use over austenitic stainless steel), ASTM C411 (hot surface performance), ASTM C1617 (corrosiveness to steel), ASTM C1763 (water absorption by immersion), ASTM C1338 (fungal resistance — No Growth), and ASTM C1101/1101M (flexibility). Water vapor sorption is ≤5% by weight (ASTM C1104/1104M).
Acoustic insulation configurations are possible to meet ISO 15665 Class A2, B2, C2, and Shell D2 — contact Aspen Aerogels for configuration details. The material can be cut using conventional tools such as scissors, tin snips, or razor knives; appropriate PPE should be worn when handling, cutting, and installing. See SDS/AIS for complete health and safety information.

What differentiates Pyrogel® XTE from conventional mineral wool or calcium silicate pipe insulation?
Pyrogel XTE is an aerogel-based blanket that achieves a thermal conductivity of 0.14 btu-in/hr-ft²-°F at 32°F mean temperature — far lower than conventional competing insulation materials — enabling a profile the TDS describes as 75% thinner than competing materials for equivalent thermal performance. Unlike conventional insulation, Pyrogel XTE is hydrophobic and breathable (water vapor sorption ≤5% by weight, ASTM C1104/1104M) and passes ASTM C1763 water absorption by immersion, making it specifically engineered for CUI defense. It also passes ASTM C795 for use over austenitic stainless steel and is reusable after inspection.
Why does thermal conductivity matter when selecting aerogel insulation?
Thermal conductivity is the primary selection criterion for insulation materials, as it directly determines the thickness required to achieve a target heat loss or surface temperature. At 0.14 btu-in/hr-ft²-°F at 32°F mean temperature, Pyrogel XTE allows significantly thinner insulation profiles versus conventional alternatives for equivalent thermal resistance — a critical advantage in congested industrial environments and for resolving mechanical clashes around piping and equipment.
What is the maximum use temperature for Pyrogel® XTE?
The estimation of maximum use temperature for Pyrogel XTE is 1200°F per ASTM C447, consistent with a linear shrinkage of less than 2% under soaking heat at 1200°F per ASTM C356.
Is Pyrogel® XTE suitable for flame-rated or regulated industrial environments?
Yes. Pyrogel XTE achieves a Flame Spread Index of ≤5 and a Smoke Developed Index of ≤10 per ASTM E84. It complies with ASTM C1728 Type III, Grade 1A (the standard specification for flexible aerogel insulation), ASTM C795 (use over austenitic stainless steel), ASTM C411 (hot surface performance), ASTM C1617 (corrosiveness to steel), and ASTM C1338 (fungal resistance — No Growth).
How should Pyrogel® XTE be specified?
Specify grade (Pyrogel® XTE), thickness (0.2" or 0.4"), compliance requirements (ASTM C1728 Type III Grade 1A, ASTM C795, ASTM E84, and others as applicable), dimensional tolerances, and finished format. For acoustic insulation applications, contact Aspen Aerogels for ISO 15665 configuration details.
