Common industries: HVAC, appliance, construction, automotive, military, industrial manufacturing.

RE45E is the firmest grade in the RE closed-cell EPDM and Neoprene blend foam series, classified ASTM D1056-07 2A5 and ASTM D6576-07 Type II A, B, C Firm. It is designed for NEMA enclosure seals, HVAC exterior curb seals, and appliance gaskets and seals where maximum compression resistance is needed.

Available in four thicknesses from 1/16″ to 1/4″, it provides the highest compression deflection, highest density, highest tensile strength (150 psi — described as “highest tensile strength” in the product features), highest tear strength (35 lb/in), and lowest compression set (max) (25%) in the RE series. The TDS explicitly identifies this as the maximum firmness foam in the series.

RE45E passes FMVSS-302 at .068″ or thicker — a lower minimum thickness than the .098″ required for RE41E, RE42E, and RE43E. MIL-R-6130C classification is II-B Firm — the only grade in the RE series with a Type II-B (rather than II-A) MIL-R-6130C classification. MIL-C-3133C MIL STD 670B designation is RE20. Resilience is 15% per ASTM D2632 — the lowest in the RE series. Compression set (max) is 25% per ASTM D1056.

Water absorption (max) is 5% per ASTM D1056. Elongation is 125% per ASTM D412. Tear strength is 35 lb/in per ASTM D624. Compression deflection change after oven aging (max) is ±30% per ASTM D1056. High intermittent temperature is 250°F. ASTM D1056-78 designation: RE45. ASTM D1056 Suffix’s: A1, B2, C1, F1, M — the only grade in the RE series carrying the B2 suffix. No thermal conductivity value and no UL listings are present on this TDS.

    Compliant with FMVSS-302 (Pass, .068″ or thicker), MIL-R-6130C II-B Firm, and MIL-C-3133C MIL STD 670B (RE20).

What differentiates RE45E from other grades in the RE EPDM foam series?

RE45E is the firmest grade in the RE series at 17–25 psi compression deflection at 25%, 10–14 lb/ft³ density, 150 psi tensile strength, and 35 lb/in tear strength — all the highest in the series. It achieves the lowest compression set (max) at 25% and the lowest resilience at 15%. It is the only grade with a MIL-R-6130C II-B (not II-A) classification, the only grade carrying the ASTM D1056 B2 suffix, and the only grade where FMVSS-302 passes at .068" minimum — thinner than the .098" minimum for all other RE grades. No thermal conductivity value is listed on the RE45E TDS.

Why is compression set critical for a firm closed-cell EPDM foam used in high-closure-force sealing?

Firm grades are installed under the highest applied loads in the series and must maintain their geometry and sealing contact force through sustained compression and thermal cycling. A firm foam that permanently deforms under the high flange loads for which it was selected loses the stiffness advantage that makes it the appropriate choice — effectively behaving like a softer grade and permitting moisture, dust, or air infiltration at lower contact pressures than designed. RE45E's compression set (max) of 25% per ASTM D1056 — the lowest in the RE series — confirms the best dimensional recovery of any grade, appropriate for the highest-load gasketing applications in the series.

What is the service temperature range for RE45E?

The service temperature range is -40°F to 200°F as listed on the TDS. High intermittent temperature is 250°F.

Is RE45E suitable for regulated automotive and military environments?

Yes. RE45E passes FMVSS-302 at .068" or thicker, meets MIL-R-6130C II-B Firm, and meets MIL-C-3133C MIL STD 670B (RE20), as listed on the TDS. No UL listings are present on this TDS.

    How should RE45E be specified?

    Specify grade (RE45EPDM), ASTM D1056 designation (2A5), applicable suffix designations (A1, B2, C1, F1, M), thickness (1/16", 1/8", 3/16", or 1/4"), color (Black), applicable compliance requirements (FMVSS-302, MIL-R-6130C II-B Firm, MIL-C-3133C MIL STD 670B RE20), dimensional tolerances, and finished format (sheet, slit roll, or die-cut component).
