- Durable, high-closure-force gaskets for doors, windows, hatches, and enclosures where softer SCE grades cannot maintain adequate sealing pressure
- Vibration and sound reduction through wall assemblies where greater deflection resistance and structural stability are required
- Weatherproofing of skylights, construction joints, and acoustical assemblies requiring a firm Neoprene foam with MIL-R-6130C II-A Firm compliance
- FMVSS-302 compliant automotive and transportation sealing applications where firm deflection resistance and the lowest minimum passing thickness in the series (.068″) are required
- Applications requiring the highest tensile and tear strength in the SCE series (150 psi tensile, 35 lb/in tear) in a firm closed-cell foam format
Common industries: Construction, automotive, HVAC, industrial manufacturing, military.
SCE45B is the firmest grade in the SCE closed-cell foam series, constructed from Neoprene only — distinct from the Neoprene/EPDM/SBR blend used in SCE41B, SCE42B, and SCE43B. Classified ASTM D1056-07 2A5 and ASTM D6576-07 Type II A, B, Firm, it provides the highest compression deflection (17–25 psi at 25%), highest density (10–14 lb/ft³), highest tensile strength (150 psi), and lowest compression set (max) (25%) in the series.
Available in nine thicknesses from 1/16″ to 3/4″ — without the 1″ option present on the softer series grades — it is suited for vibration and sound reduction through wall assemblies, weatherproofing of skylights, construction and acoustical applications, and gasketing of doors, windows, and hatches where a more durable, high-closure-force gasket is required.
The material passes FMVSS-302 at .068″ or thicker — a lower minimum thickness than the .098″ required for SCE41B, SCE42B, and SCE43B. It is Listed under UL94 HF-1 and meets MIL-R-6130C II-A Firm. MIL-C-3133C MIL STD 670B designation is SCE20. Resilience is 15% per ASTM D2632 — the lowest in the SCE series. Water absorption (max) is 5% per ASTM D1056. Tensile strength is 150 psi and elongation is 125% per ASTM D412.
Tear strength is 35 lb/in per ASTM D624 — the highest tear strength in the series. Compression deflection change after oven aging (max) is ±30% per ASTM D1056. Thermal conductivity is .38 btu/(h·ft²·°F). High intermittent temperature is 250°F. ASTM D1056 designations: ASTM D1056-67 SCE45, ASTM D1056-78 RE45. ASTM D1056 Suffix’s: A1, B2, C1, F1, M — the only grade in the series carrying the B2 suffix.
Compliant with FMVSS-302 (Pass, .068″ or thicker), UL94 HF-1 (Listed¹), MIL-R-6130C II-A Firm, and MIL-C-3133C MIL STD 670B (SCE20).
What differentiates SCE45B from other grades in the SCE Neoprene foam series?
SCE45B is the firmest grade in the series and the only grade composed of Neoprene only — not the Neoprene/EPDM/SBR blend used in SCE41B, SCE42B, and SCE43B. It has the highest compression deflection (17–25 psi), highest density (10–14 lb/ft³), highest tensile strength (150 psi), highest tear strength (35 lb/in), and lowest compression set (max) (25%) in the series. It is the only grade without a 1" thickness option (nine gauges maximum at 3/4"), has the lowest service temperature upper limit in the series at 150°F (versus 200°F for the other grades), and is the only grade carrying the ASTM D1056 B2 suffix. FMVSS-302 passes at .068" — a thinner minimum than the .098" required for the other three grades.
Why is compression set critical for a firm closed-cell Neoprene foam used in high-closure-force gasketing?
Firm foam grades are installed under higher flange loads than softer grades and must maintain their geometry and sealing contact force through sustained compression. A high compression set in a firm grade negates its primary advantage — the ability to maintain high contact force under load — by causing the material to permanently flatten, reducing the sealing force to levels below what was designed. SCE45B's compression set (max) of 25% per ASTM D1056 — the lowest in the SCE series — confirms the best dimensional recovery of any grade, appropriate for the highest-load gasketing and weatherproofing applications in the series.
What is the service temperature range for SCE45B?
The service temperature range is -40°F to 150°F as listed on the TDS. High intermittent temperature is 250°F. Note that the upper service temperature of 150°F is lower than the 200°F listed for SCE41B, SCE42B, and SCE43B.
Is SCE45B suitable for regulated automotive and military environments?
Yes. SCE45B passes FMVSS-302 at .068" or thicker, meets MIL-R-6130C II-A Firm, and meets MIL-C-3133C MIL STD 670B (SCE20). It is Listed under UL94 HF-1, as listed on the TDS. Note that UL157, UL48, UL50, UL508, and UL50E listings present on SCE42B and SCE43B are not listed on the SCE45B TDS.
How should SCE45B be specified?
Specify grade (SCE45BNEO), ASTM D1056 designation (2A5), applicable suffix designations (A1, B2, C1, F1, M), thickness (1/16" through 3/4"), color (Black), applicable compliance requirements (FMVSS-302, MIL-R-6130C II-A Firm, UL94 HF-1), dimensional tolerances, and finished format (sheet, slit roll, or die-cut component).
