Tips for Applying Pressure Sensitive Tape
By the H-O Products applications engineering team · Updated August 2023 · ~3 min read

Pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape is a versatile, easy-to-use tape that forms a strong bond when light pressure is applied — no heat, solvent, or cure cycle required. Getting a reliable bond, though, depends on how it is applied. Five practices make the difference.
1. Select the right tape for the job
Match the PSA tape to your project's specific substrate material, stress conditions, and environment. A tape that performs beautifully on bare aluminum may struggle on a low-surface-energy plastic.
2. Prepare the surface
Clean surfaces thoroughly and make sure they are fully dry before application. For challenging substrates, use a primer to promote adhesion.
3. Respect temperature guidelines
Follow the manufacturer's application temperature range, and pre-heat or cool surfaces as needed. Most PSAs bond poorly to cold substrates.
4. Apply with consistent pressure
Apply the tape gradually with steady, even pressure, and use a roller to eliminate air bubbles. Pressure is what wets the adhesive onto the surface — it's in the name.
5. Care for the bond afterward
Allow adequate dwell time for the adhesive to build strength, and inspect periodically for damage in service.
Why PSA tape earns its place
Done right, PSA tape offers versatility, ease of use, light weight, reliable performance, and efficient, clean assembly — eliminating screws, rivets, and liquid adhesives along with the labor they carry.
H-O Products has been converting custom engineered tapes, pads, and gaskets for more than 50 years. For applications requiring custom formulations or technical guidance, our team can help you select and spec the right PSA system.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my PSA tape not sticking?
The usual culprits are a contaminated or damp surface, a cold substrate, a low-surface-energy plastic that needs a primer or LSE adhesive, or insufficient application pressure.
How long before a PSA bond reaches full strength?
Most PSAs continue building strength for 24 to 72 hours after application as the adhesive wets out the surface. Follow the manufacturer dwell-time guidance before loading the joint.
