Tips to Select Ultra High Temperature Tapes
By the H-O Products applications engineering team · Updated May 2023 · ~4 min read

Ultra high temperature tapes are specialized materials designed to withstand 500°F to 2000°F or higher, built from silicone, fiberglass, PTFE, or polyimide constructions. Selecting the right one comes down to four questions about how the heat actually behaves in your application.
Where ultra high temperature tapes are used
- Thermal insulation for heat-sensitive components
- High-temperature gaskets and seals for furnaces and ovens
- Engine and exhaust system gasketing
- Electrical insulation for wires and cables
The four selection factors
1. What type of heat exposure?
Continuous exposure (an industrial furnace running around the clock) stresses a material differently than intermittent exposure (an aircraft engine cycling through flight phases). Rated temperature alone doesn't capture the difference — duration and cycling do.
2. Which materials and adhesives?
Evaluate thermal stability and chemical resistance of both the backing and the adhesive, and decide between pressure-sensitive attachment and mechanical bonding. The adhesive is usually the temperature-limiting element.
3. Is the surface compatible?
Surface texture and composition affect bond quality at any temperature, and proper preparation technique matters more as service temperature climbs.
4. Which industry standards apply?
Confirm compliance requirements early — aerospace specifications, FDA requirements, or other applicable certifications will narrow the candidate list quickly.

We convert polyimide, PTFE, and silicone foam variants, with customization available for OEM applications. Our team provides technical consultation on material selection and converts the chosen material to print — slit, laminated, and die-cut.
Ready to select a high-temperature tape?
Send the peak and continuous temperatures, the exposure pattern, the substrate, and any standard you must meet. Engineering reviews every RFQ and recommends a construction.
Samples typically ship in 3 to 5 business days for common die-cut configurations; standard production runs about two weeks; special orders are quoted to the job.

Frequently asked questions
What limits a tape at high temperature — the backing or the adhesive?
Usually the adhesive. Backings like fiberglass, PTFE, and polyimide tolerate more heat than most adhesives, so the adhesive system typically sets the practical service limit.
Continuous vs. intermittent heat — why does it matter?
A material that survives brief peaks can still degrade under continuous soak at a lower temperature. Duration and cycling determine aging, so specify both the peak and the continuous exposure.
